Coronavirus (2021) thread

A very balanced thread on the news yesterday.
The severity news being negative, but the transmission news being recorded as 51% increase on Alpha variant, down from previously estimated 67%, is very good news. Have a read through.

Conclusion, keep vaccinating, vaccinating and more vaccinating. 2 doses very good protection and 1 dose helping keep people out of hospital.

Why? Why should someone who has tested negative on numerous occasions, probably jabbed or double jabbed, lose possibly over a week’s pay and sit in isolation from society when they almost certainly don’t have coronavirus?
Jesus, we’ve been living through this for months and months now and you still don’t know that it can take up to ten days for a positive test/asymptomatic/symptoms/illness to display itself from the point of contraction?

I could test myself twice a day for the first nine days of my isolation but wake up on the final day of my ten day isolation and test positive.

This is exactly the sort of shit that will see a variant spread that starts to bypass vaccines.

There’s no joke about it. The rules are the rules until the rules change and the date for which the rules are to be changed hasn’t come yet. That’s like the referee blowing up on 80 minutes on Saturday and saying “we’ll, City don’t look like scoring, let’s just give the European Cup to Chelsea”.

People shouldn’t stop isolating just because you fancy it being time to stop.

It’s less than 50% who have been vaccinated by the way, 75% have received one jab.
The example was of 2 people who have both had 2 jabs. So clearly the rules aren’t going to change on the date you’re referring to so how can it end? We know people who have had 2 jabs will still carry it but just have less chance of dying from it than winning the lottery if fit and healthy.

Clearly they’re starting to up the anti with scaremongering now to prepare for yet again moving the goal posts on June 21st. This isn’t people deciding simply its time to stop its people becoming sick of the lies we’ve been fed for 15 months and now starting to see through the bullshit and realise that it can’t end if governments keep making everyone who has had contact with someone who tests positive isolate. This isn’t going to disappear just like flu won’t.

When do you think it will cease to be necessary?

Until the rules change they should be followed. It’s quite simple. I don’t pay attention to what the politicians say, and certainly not what the media says, I just follow the rules that are in place on the gov website. Until they change on the advice of the scientists, they should be followed.

Whenever the scientists say that enough of the population have been vaccinated and the virus is suppressed enough for them to give the go ahead for the govt to say it ceases.

If people had followed the rules at every point from last March, no matter what Govt mistakes have been made, we’d be in a better position now.

yep the whole world needs Vaccinating

Tyranny lol

You might laugh mate, and considering the level of global tyranny, currently and historically, probably rightly so. However, it is actually the definition of tyrannical, which is cruel, oppressive, or arbitrary use of power to control - for me this, at least technically, ticks all 3 boxes.

Tyranny doesn't have to be on the level of gassing the Kurds.

Tyranny of the masses is a thing too, you know, whereby the majority forces it's choices upon a minority.

Not arguing in favour of any of this, just stating a fact.

This is what you seem to be missing. The scientists will NEVER say ‘ok we’re good to go now’ (a medical end to a pandemic) because there will ALWAYS be variants coming along that ‘may’ be more transmissble and ‘could’ evade vaccines. The scientists have already shown they simply will not ever be capable of saying it’s the end until all risks have been eliminated now and going forward, which of course will never happen. Of course from an epidemiological POV that’s understandable because they don’t have to worry about the impact such advice has on the economy or welfare of citizens as that’s not their brief. That is down to politicians but unfortunately, although I appreciate they have a difficult job, they have demonstrated absolute incompetence, weakness, lack of leadership and slopey shoulders. If they wait for scientists to tell them everything is ok and things can get back to normal then that WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Which leaves us with a social ending of the pandemic when everyone just gets fed up with it and decides enough is enough. Those that are scared of this killer virus that most survive and most are vaccinated against will overtake those that are happy to live with restrictions ad nauseum. Humanity has only ever eradicated smallpox and so the zero covid advocates are the loons around here not those that have long since realised we need to get on with our lives before living morphs into existing.

At what point does destroying the entire travel / hospitality / tourism industries (delete as appropriate) and the associated livelihoods of those in those sectors, along with the untold damage being done to generations of young people outweigh the theoretical risks of variants that will NEVER EVER stop coming along?

There is no exit strategy it is clear as day and those that are cheerleaders for the government’s incompetence are complicit in the damage they are causing. Why have they not pumped billions into increasing NHS capacity for winter?

A little piece on medical v social endings. Not saying it is definitive but it is worth musing for those sat at home cowering away waiting for Neil Ferguson etc to tell you everything is ok…..

Yep, fact we are vaccinating younger people who should have a stronger response to first jab as well is a bonus.

Nice weather should help too.

My main gripe would be England hasn't gone as fast as Wales in vaccinating.

Thing is tho there is no 1 science consensus. as this covers lots of fields.

You have the medical side that have side that are only there to give a medical view, they will always air on the side of caution and less deaths.

You have the data scientists. the ones that model things out. generally they themselves dont have an "opinion", Neil Ferguson is an example. he models statistical data nothing more but does keep getting asked for opinions. there will be others that are mapping out estimated dates for hitting herd immunity with vaccine cover, so on and so forth.

You then have the Virologist side, the ones working on vaccines etc and studying the path of the virus trying to predict where it goes and risks from variants etc.

You then have the Big data science guys who correlate all this data into advice for the Gov.

the roadmap dates will have been formed from all these things put together. a key factor will have been the mapping of herd immunity.

One of the biggest issues is that the Media will on the most part be talking to the medical experts. those more likely to be airing on the side of caution.

Agree, Scotland too. Wales way ahead in first doses in younger age groups and its showing.

Need to keep at it.

More on Reditch. Having done research:
- Large number of wear housing businesses
- Large number of cool area food processing businesses.
- Higher than average car sharing for both work and taking kids to school.

Brilliant post

Wales. Why are they coping so well when Scotland and England are not? Is this the only logical answer or are there other factors at play?

I posted a table a week or so back of the top ten most vaccinated countries in the world by percentage of all 'adults' (as in over 15 I think it was),

Wales were the best in the world. All the 4 UK nations were in the top 5 or 6. But Wales has done best without doubt

And so far its numbers justify that. Whih makes it ironic that the gap between UK and Portugal sees us costing people thousands to fly home and self isolate whereas it is not as wide as the one between Wales and NW England which lets anyone walk acrosss the border.

That is almost certainly risking a big problem in Wales 100 times worse than nobody from Wales going to Portugal will prevent.

And that we would be sub 1000 cases in the UK now IF we had not let the Delta variant flood in. And full opening up would be assured.

Those decisions made and why they were made need an urgent investigation now or this will not be the last time we make such costly errors.

I suspect the Portugal decision and other non changes yesterday are a realisation they messed uo big time and so we will see ultra caution from now on.

Indeed the Gov just said as much on the BBC stating it was a Nepalling decision.

Or rather the numbers of what they fear is a bad variant from Nepal found in Portugal are the issue not raw numbers and that is why they reacted swiftly.
