So why is indoor hospitaility open?
Why are people allowed to attend sporting events?
Why is there a new headline saying 10,000 people can attend outdoor events in Wales?

All of these are supposedly far less risk than travelling. I'm sorry, I don't believe it.
The idea that we can stop these nasty variants by preventing people travelling to areas that have comparable infection rates to us is, quite frankly, laughable.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy theory, but nothing that the government is saying makes any sense at the moment.
Their decisions in one area don't stack up against decisions in another area.

So the vast majority of high risk are double vaccinated and the majority of people who are low risk of even being hospitalized never mind die have had one dose which increased protection by 33% lol.

If we still only had the initial strain. The current dominant one significantly increases the risk of hospitalisation even in low risk. You also increase the possibility of it mutating further in those that don’t have sufficient antibodies (I.e. anyone who’s only had one dose). Lol...

Figures showed there were 278 people with the variant who attended A&Es this week, up from 201 last week, while there were 94 overnight hospital admissions for patients with the Delta variant, up from 43 admissions the previous week.

The majority of those admitted to hospital had not received a coronavirus vaccination. lol

In news that will surprise nobody, the BBC now carries a report from a doctor that says that the "Nepalese" variant is already present in the UK.

Given that this was the reason for flipping Portugal from green to amber, can we expect the government to now restrict our movements and socialising in the UK? After all, only yesterday they told us they are concerned about the variant.

Because you then increase the number of variants in the population. If we still only had the initial strain, or even the Kent variant, then it wouldn’t be as much of an issue. Why do you think every scientist has been banging on about vaccine equality? You’ve literally got proof of what travelling without quarantine can do with the Indian strain.

Hopefully over the next few weeks, particularly now they’ve reduced the gap between first and second doses, we at least mitigate the risk domestically. Not if we go stupid over travelling and green lists again though.

I'm not hiding under my bed in any way, shape or form. I am, however, still happy to take every possible precaution until I, and loved ones are at no possible risk. To me, the trauma of potentially losing a grandparent, is far more damaging to my kids than missing out on a trip abroad. But hey, each to their own.

The crossing roads analogy is a false equivalency, but I suspect you knew that when you posted it.

I don't follow. It's OK from somebody from Wales or Scotland or Manchester to travel to Blackburn, Bolton or Bedford (or Southampton? Christ knows what variants are lurking there) - bring whatever they pick up back to their communities, but the same is not true of Portugal, Spain or France etc?

Think about it. What you are saying is that somehow the virus knows it's on one side of the border rather than the other.

The simple fact is that people from A mixing with people from B can cause variants - it doesn't matter where A and B are. If you take this to its logical extreme, we should all be back in lockdown with food parcels through the door.
Variants will happen in significant numbers regardless of who does what and where they go.

I sat it again: the way the government are acting is based on no logic (or at the very best, misguided logic).

Despite all my rants this morning, I should say that I think I am being sensibleabout this. Wife, I and eldest daughter have all had two jabs - youngest daughter hasn't had any. We are not going to be flying anywhere until she has had her first jab.

We'll be going to Spain in August as long as it is amber or green (with specialist insurance if necessary) not least because my eldest starts her delayed Spanish language year abroad in Madrid then .... Waits for somebody to come on and say she should be doing her year aboard in Blackpool.

I completely agree on your last point.

Any of this is mitigation of risk. The chance of a variation domestically compared to internationally is big, particularly given the varying states of vaccination levels in other countries. Why risk it when we’re only months away from having over 80% of the population double dosed? At least mitigate it currently through quarantine.

Got Spain booked for August 2nd, was originally booked for August 2020 but moved it back a year.
Hopefully we will go, long overdue a holiday.

You do know there are lanes, pavements, traffic lights, pedestrian and zebra crossings, speed limits, the Highway Code in general, you have to pass three types of tests to be legally allowed to drive, you have to have insurance and pay tax on your car, have the car serviced and pass MOTs, there are drink and drug driving laws, brakes and other safety aspects on cars to help prevent all these deaths don’t you?

People aren’t just going around driving however they like under no rules, restrictions or laws like the bumper cars at the funfair.

You're right, I think we are always, unfortunately, going to be living in the shadow of this thing.

Personally, when I'm confident that the UK and Europe has hit an 80% fully vaccinated threshold, I'll feel more comfortable.

Not perfect, but much safer.

Look, I get it. We all want a form of 'normal life' back again. But, in my opinion, 1 avoidable death is too many. So for now, missing out on a holiday abroad seems like a reasonable sacrifice.
