Isn't it mildly worrying that we depend on Broad and Anderson so much? I mean, they've been titans and everything, but who is the new blood coming through?
I really like Sam Curran although he isn’t as effective overseas. Robinson I thought looked promising last test, archer will come again assuming he can get over his elbow issue. Woakes is a miss in this test series as he always performs well at home and obviously stokes is always good for a key wicket.

Not concerned about the seeming options where as I am concerned about the lack of a quality spinner. Bess and leach aren’t good enough, Ali doesn’t seem interested in test cricket and the same with rashid sadly. Been a problem since Swann retired

Matt Parkinson might be worth a try. Can’t be much worse than Bess and Leach.

Could Simon Harmer become eligible to play for England? His stats are always amazing for Essex.

Parkinson deserves a shot but it would probably have to be at Old Trafford which is probably the only home Test ground that has enough bounce to give a leg-spinner a decent amount of help. For that reason I think a tour (where he actually plays) would be better for Parkinson.

just watched the last hour before tea and clueless root bowling lolly pops

why have england opted to not have a spinner ? its crazy and unfair on the fast bowlers having to bowl seam up all day a spinner is more than worth a place in the team if only to keep the quickies fresh and something different at one end. root is not even a part time spinner he's worst than that

i will also say what has happened to the slower bowl or the yorker even cutters its all the same shit over after over
england need a revamp at test cricket and work on the next ashes in england in 2 years times

new captain ? new bowlers ? a spinner in the team every game. lets have it right ECB your charging good money for fans to watch cricket and your taking the piss

The problem is is that Root is as good a spinner as Bess and Leach, but can bat. The only other spinner that can bat well is Moeen Ali and he’s had mental health issues and doesn’t want to play test cricket at the moment.

The biggest issue is the lack of allrounders in the team. It makes the balance much harder to achieve. Who would you drop to accommodate your spinner? One less batsman in an already shaky lineup or one less bowler, meaning the quirks still have a heavy workload?

Yorkers and slower balls have always been used sparingly in test cricket, by all teams outside of the subcontinent.

The only thing Root could have done better in the middle session was not dropping that catch.

How NZ are only 2 down I'll never know. Great discipline by them. But England have bowled really well again, just like much of the first test without getting the rewards. Definitely missing a better back up seamer and a spinner but they can't be doing much more.

Root and Olli Stone have fed them some very easy runs, Stone has an uncanny resemblance to Phil Chuckle which is most unfortunate.
