Harry Kane

Torres will be even better next season after a slow start but good numbers this season, so that wouldn’t be going backwards. Also it’s been said we were serious about Haaland for months, and Mbappe has a year left on his contract, both of them would suit us more than Kane and we’d be daft not to be seriously looking at them. They’re two I’d rather have than Kane.

That’s a valid point and I don’t think that many people would disagree with taking Mbappe or Haaland over Kane.

What’s stupid though is when people say that if Mbappe or Haaland are unavailable, they’d rather give Torres a chance than sign Kane.

Rating someone the best is an opinion. Can argue all day but can’t prove either way. We want a striker, we want the best of the best. Assists are ignored because that clearly proves he isn’t just a goal scoring machine. He’s an all round player because he does both. Unsure what’s being missed, you want him to take on 5 men, meg the last man and bang it in the top corner? As long as he scores that’s all I care about, which he would do for fun

Exactly. It is opinion.

People band it about aggressively like it is a quantfiable fact that he is the best. It is not. And he is not, in my opinion.

And while we are at it, that opinion is fairly evenly split, looking at this thread.

I’m writing an apology to the great people of Algeria. A little perspective makes their fanaticism look good in retrospect

I'm not ignoring goals. I'm pointing out other players score as many or more goals, when people use numbers to argue he is the best of the best and anyone that thinks otherwise is a moron.

I do think he is an excellent goal scorer, a great all round player. He lacks pace and he is also older than the profile the club would normally pay big for, but that's for them to worry about. I do also think he is not a game changer, in the sense he won't singlehandedly produce moments out of nothing that win games. Big or otherwise.

It is ok to rate Kane, and not think he is the right signing, particularly when that kind of money can but real top players.

As much as you get irritated with exaggerating his shortcomings and some of the apparent cliches, I respond to over the top bigging him up. For every 'he goes missing in big games' there is an equal and oppisite 'best striker in the league, guaranteed 40 goals'. Or 'he plays in a poor spurs side' whic incidentally reached a CL final, came close to winning the league and reached a cup final playing to his strengths.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, by the time you strip off the exaggeration on both sides. And even then, it is, for me, not good enough for the 100m+ it would cost.
Well done on writing something constructive not filled with lies or nonsense. I think the only thing ignored with his numbers is the size of them. We all got hard over agueros goals to minutes ratio, guess who’s number one now aguero has left? It’s not a couple we are talking about it’s consistently scoring a hat full, 3 golden boots…

Same as the vote at the top of the page.
Half are idiots for not wanting him (untrue) and half are idiots cos they do (justified) : )

I've only seen that suggested in the context of then signing a top player next year rather than spending so big on kane.

It is tiresome.

'how can you possibly not want harry kane he is the best in the league'
- I don't think he is the best in the league
'numbers'
- others have had better numbers
'so aguero is shit then'
-no, he was great, and not because of his numbers
'so you are ignoring kane's numbers'

It is not that I don't want Harry bloody Kane. I will well support him when he comes. It is that I can't seem to convince myself he is the best signing, particularly given the money it will take and what.that can get.

It is also that I don't think it is as likely to happen as others make out, and I am happy to continue to consider and discuss other options while it is all either fluid or unknown to us. Which I think will be the case for most of the summer, and I wouldn't rule out something u predictable happeing.

I must have missed that, when ?
In 2019-20 Tammy Abraham scored 15 goals and got 3 assists in 34 games.
He got less time in 2020-21 and scored 6 in 22 (quite a few as sub).

Not stellar numbers but a solid contribution from a player that came through the ranks and went on loan to a few teams before getting his chance for Chelsea.

Nmecha's career has taken a similar path so it would be interesting to see what he could do given the chance - not going to happen though.

I probably started the Bony stuff off : )
I ain’t going off just the Euro’s.
I don’t think he’s a big game player, I think he goes missing over 90 minutes of games, not just against top opposition, some of which he scores in and glosses over his 90 minutes.
I mentioned the 3 games as he looked like he had lead boots on, went missing and wasn’t involved at all.
Then people mention no service, system etc..
but maybe it’s just me that wants more to his all round game for a £130m+ player.
When Bony was with Swansea he was known as “The Statue of Liberty”.

So if Kane did sign how do you think the team will be set up? He does a good job for Spurs dropping deep and finding runners (normally Son) but I cannot see him doing that for City as that would conflict with the areas that our dual 8's do their best work not to mention inverted wingers coming in-field.

The fact that Sterling was reportedly offered as a swap also seems to preclude that as he would be the natural runner to play the Son role (if only he was as good in 1-v-1 situations).

I am sure that Pep and co. would know exactly how they would use him however that is I think we would see a big change in the way we play.

Other strikers have scored more goals than him, 3 out of the last 4 seasons. or 5 of the 7 in total he has been playing top level.

He is certainly amongst the top. For 100m+, bit of a stretch.

He‘s always in the top 3 or 4 every season though, so even if he gets a couple of goals fewer than the top scorer it still means he‘s consistently a great goalscorer which is what we currently lack.

He only plays that way at Spurs because of Mourinho. He was the focal point to start counter attacks, but we don't play like Mourinho's teams. Kane would probably only drop deep when teams high press, but all our strikers do this regardless. Aguero and Jesus drop back to be an extra man to help progress the ball.
If teams aren't pressing high and put on a low block there is no reason for him to drop deep he can be on the position a striker would be in the final 3rd.

I think these England showings have displayed that with Kane there'd always be certain issues. Although at the same time, the eagerness by some to dismiss him does come off as arrogant.

I could probably say the same about Lukaku tbf.

I'm going to be incredibly dull and say this. If the club are making a big money move for Kane (or whoever), I'll assume that this player is very good, and more than good enough for City's ambitions.
