Out of interest- practically everyone I know, and all I hear in pubs when we play is ‘how sh*t Sterling is’ and he’s blatantly the scapegoat when England don’t play well.

Do you not give Southgate credit for sticking with him especially with so much attacking talent at his disposal and Sterling so far proving everyone wrong ?

I think there are a couple of reasons why he is scapegoated by England fans.
One is that over the past few years he's been England's main (and only) real creative threat. Not having the talent around him that he has at City can see him trying to do too much, not trusting those around him and and often losing possession. He was singled out at Euro 2016 but there were players who performed much worse than him that got off lightly.
Second would be the media narrative that surrounded him when he moved to City, that has certainly had influence over how people perceive him.

You can give credit to Southgate for sticking with him, but I wouldn't say he's proved anyone wrong just yet. His performances, as with the whole team, have been pretty poor (to be fair his goals are a pretty f**king important). I'd still start Sterling as I belive he is a quality player and that hios form will turn around plus Rashford, Saka and Sancho are not as good as him, but shift him to the right to allow Foden to play in his preferred position.

The more think about it the more I see us a favourites for this game. I just hope the occasion and pressure doesn't get to them, this could be Southgate's strength as a coach.

Couple of big decisions need making, otherwise we are going out......

I'd go with

------------------Pickford------------------
Walker--------Stones---Maguire--------Shaw
--------------------Rice----------------------
-------------Foden----Mount-----------
-----Saka--------Sterling------Grealish

I’d be very happy with that line up, It’s a team setup to win. But Southgate isn’t that brave so we know it will never happen.

First names on his sheet are Kane and Sterling. He’ll setup not to lose, fuck trying to win the game, he will be hoping we bore the Germans into a mistake. If I was playing against England and it was 0-0 I’d score an own goal in the 90th minute just to make the pain stop.

1-0 this game will finish, to the Germans probably. And it will be a fucking dire game to watch. Yes I’m available for parties, weddings and bar mitzvah’s.

The other reason is something that I've had confirmed recently. Pub football fans are nearly all utterly fucking clueless about football. I took my lads to a pub to watch the last two England games and was shocked. Decked in England shirts, singing ten German Bombers, the vast majority didn't watch the game, they chatted and just glanced at the screen occasionally. When England scored they went absolutely apeshit like a proper fan does, but then just went back to their beer and chatting.

They just pass round these little Groupthink cliches to each other and it becomes their accepted truth. "Sterling is shit" is one of them.

I'd absolutely love it if he was the matchwinner against Germany again. Poor lad deserves it for the bullying he's had.

While I want us to win I have several reasons to want a loss.

1. Don't want Southgate and his style of football canonised and imposed on us for next 10 years.

2. Want our players to get a good break.

3. Want to get transfers sorted.

On second thoughts.... Come on Germany!!

Tbf to Southgate he has shown that he's pretty loyal to his players and reckon he told Phil that he'd be back for the next game regardless.

Assuming the reports are correct.

Kane has done nothing to keep his place, but it was inevitable he would start.

Would you drop Aguero for City when he was in his prime if he had a couple of quiet games ?

Most world class strikers go through quiet patches, it happens. but you don't lose faith because you know they have the ability to turn it on at any time.

I was arguing football with a Liverpool fan at work last year and comparing the merits of Kompany with VdV. The red nose's final "conclusive fact" was that Holland, in international games, always chose VdV over Kompany. I made no comment, one day his expert analysis will dawn on him.

Well in fairness, he's right.

Could never understand why VK didn't ever get the nod for England. :(

Its not just a quiet patch,he looks out of form and physically unfit.

Other players would give us more.
