Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid Player (pg620)

Because I don't think Madrid will want to pay it if they can get him for nothing. Psg might want to cash in but they can't force him to go or Madrid to pay

This.... I think Mbappe and his people will sit tight because his dream is to go to Madrid and Real cannot afford a fee so he will see out his final year and then move to Madrid on a free next summer. Gonna be a bitter pill for PSG but one over which they have no control.

This scenario seems reasonable, but if Barca and Real (or any club, for that matter) tap up players, and encourage them to run down their contracts it will have huge ramifications for European football.
A club that embarks on this strategy will soon become ostracised throughout the continent.
No other club will deal with them, and clauses will be inserted into contracts to either force the player out in his final year for a fee, or add an extended 1 or 2 years on the contract at the behest of the club.

Bollox. Munich have been doing this for years. Milner/Liverpool did it with us

far from being clamped down on, I see this becoming the norm in future

Exactly, unless wages start coming down, transfer fees will fall rapidly, we are seeing the struggles Barca are having, this is just the start.

Feel abit like this thread is pointless, the club would of explored every opportunity to sign him and ur a fool if u think otherwise!

I’m sure the city have been told a strict no by mbappes agent (because of madrid)

massive shame as I’m sure psg would of done a deal for him with mahrez, Sterling, laporte or Jesus going the other way plus cash!

Maybe I should have clarified. I meant from one top tier club to another (Milner went when we were still climbing the ladder, and fuck him anyway. You can't compare Milner to Mbappe, ffs!!).

I know the little fish clubs have been picked off for years. But Madrid coveting a PSG record signing, "trophy" player will go down bad in the corridors of UEFA power.

When the big fish start feeding off each other the caviar is going to hit the fan!!

The transfer fee revolt will happen, clubs will only pay reasonable amounts.

The only logical reason for a player to accept a new contract from a club they don't plan on staying at long term, is if their wages go up astronmically and they still want to be there for atleast another year or two (Sancho).

This is why the Kane situation is kind of nuts, the fee is way too high, and Kane's contract is too long for City to have him run down.

Sorry mate, I don't agree.
Clubs and players will never admit that's why they're doing it. The player will just run down his contract. He doesn't have to justify his decision to anyone - in fact it's fairly obvious why it's in a players interest to do so, as he gets a huge part of the 'transfer fee' as a signing on fee. That was basically the reason for Milners move - despite our 'lowly' position at the time.
Players will realise, if the haven't already, that there's lots of money to be made by fulfilling their contract and moving on.
Long term, I think we could see lower transfer fees (inflation excepted) as the total fee money moves from transfer fee to signing on fee

Don't forget the wonderfully titled 'loyalty bonuses' paid for seeing out a contract that the player happily walks away from for nothing.

Fully agree.

The big winners are the players (+agents) who let their contracts run down. You have to think in line with total cost. £100k a weak is £5.2m a year over a 5 year deal that is £26m. That is nothing in comparison to a big transfer fee in the current market.

So players signing up for a 5 year deal on £100k a weak are taking chump change. A top player should be thinking that a £100m fee + wages is what top clubs are willing to pay for a top player. So if i'm an agent and I have a client like Mbappe - I'm saying run that bad boy down and ask for £150m over 5 years minimum, and that goes 100% to the player (+agent). Why would you not do that as a top player. Clubs + UEFA can do F all to stop it.

Fans wont like it but they will have to adjust because there is only going to be more of it.

I’m pretty sanguine about transfer fees as they effectively use ‘wooden dollars’. The money might go from one club to another but stays within the game. Wages and agent’s fees are money going out of the sport. If transfer fees do effectively disappear then I would fear for the survival of some selling clubs.

To be honest, I'm not sure fans will care too much.
If City say were to pay £100m to Spurs for Kane + (say) £250k pw salary, would the fans care if instead it was £100m sign on fee + £250k pw salary.
The club is forking out the same amount

Doesn’t that depend, if you also arent selling players that £100 mill has gone out of the game. Where the £100 mill fee could be re couped in sales, but if you don’t have players to sell then you are the full £100 mill down.

Yet as a club we've managed to buck that 'trend' pretty well with our main assets.
Clubs, as businesses, will cotton on pretty quick to this. It will be very rare for a player to enter the last 12 months of a contract going forward (unless they're 30 plus) - more likely it's extend with 18 months/2 years left or you're on the market and we'll see who bites

I guess it'd come down to how much of the clubs income relates to player sales
