You have to add in the IR35 changes - quite a few drivers were expected to go self employed and income tax changes meant they were going to be worse off so left. There was also a modern move to micro-manage drivers - changes in manifest at short notice and camera's in cabs observing divers every movement ( ever wondered how in recent years drivers causing crashes by negligence are on film in the cab? Thats the evidence taken from the cab-cam used in court to convict them )
The old idea of "freedom of the road" and your own boss has gone and its done for a lot drivers - my brother-in-law who has driven years since he left the Army is 60 in a couple of moths and is jacking it in himself.
 
A local transport firm is offering to train you and once trained will give you £1000, stay 3 months get another £1000, stay 6 months get another £1000, stay 12 months get £2000. That is on top of £15 ph weekdays and £20 ph weekends. How long can you drive for 11 hours a day? Not sure what the regs are. 5 day week £750 a week, £3k a month?

Just a thought that occurred to me - I suspect the vast majority of Army transport is rigid not articulated so most hold class 2 HGV qualifications not class 1. I saw somewhere earlier there are less than 450 class 1 drivers in the Armed forces - so quite simply the Army mobilization story was just another smokescreen to distract from the Brexit shit show.

Wonder if we'll eventually get to the narrative that 'if it wasn't for Covid, Brexit would've been a success'. Aside from a bit of earlier vaccine triumphalism, I can't think of anyone saying Brexit has been beneficial, including the zealots who championed it.

what bolloxes up that theory though is that Covid is world wide - so the EU has no driver shortages, no harvesting issues, no empty shelves and mutti und grossvater are not being called upon to empty the bins so the pandemic is the leveller that proves Brexit is the issue.

Totally agree, I just wonder if the charlatans who 'got brexit done' will use it as an excuse!

Even vaccine triumphalism is in short supply now that Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and Malta have all overtaken us.

Yeah,that’s a bit of a problem.
As COVID becomes more manageable then they’ll have to cast around for something else to blame.
My money is on the tried an trusted ‘EU unelected fascist bureaucrats whose sole aim is to destroy this great nation whatever the cost’
They will never go away so it’s a good source of ammunition for the foaming-at-the-mouth brigade in the short/medium term.

Interesting to see how trade in Ireland is reconfiguring after Brexit. Source BBC.

‘In Q2 21, RoI–GB RoRo volumes fell by 20% compared to Q2 19. For the first 6 months of 2021, GB traffic declined by 29% compared to 2019. RoI–GB traffic now accounts for 67% of RoI volumes, compared to 84% two years ago.‘

Also applicable to LoLo volumes ‘The vast majority of LoLo services on the island of Ireland are direct to continental EU ports. As a result, many of the factors that have driven a surge in ROI – EU RoRo traffic are applicable to the Irish LoLo market.’

NI also capturing business from RoI to avoid trade barriers from RoI to GB - even though GB hasn’t introduced border controls (yet). Brexit is pushing NI and RoI to work as a collective whole to circumvent the trade barriers GB has put up, or is scheduled to introduce.
 
German trade figures also reflecting weakness of UK trade. Latest data:

+3% U.K.’

German imports from major European partners
Jan-June 2021 vs Jan-June 2020:

+32% Belgium
+11% Netherlands
+10% France
+25% Italy
+12% Spain
+25% Poland
+22% Czech Republic
+19% Austria

-11% UK’

Note: These are snapshots. Need more data to predict trends.

I was in the middle, willing to accept the benefits but have seen nothing to date. Can anybody, left or right show me the benefits?
