Afghanistan

Most of them are Russian helicopters that were cheaper to buy, and easier to learn to fly. I doubt we will see the Taliban establish a viable air force, unless they bring in skilled pilots, trainers, engineers and other support team (using contractors) it doesn't look possible.

I suspect what might happen to them is that they will be sold onto neighbouring countries or offloaded to shady arms dealers who will either sell them as full units or strip them for parts.

Agreed. Without trained support staff, access to spares, then most major or complex hardware quickly becomes useless. You don't even have to spike them.

Stripped down and sold off for hard currency is the likeliest outcome.

"When was the last time anyone from your department visited one of these countries used for negotiations with the Taliban?"

"I'll have to get back to you on that..."

"So you don't know if any of your ministers visited Uzbekistan?"

"Erm...."

wouldn't even confirm the date he went on holiday..............asked 10 times. You know that means the timing will just mean more embarrassment for them
Not sure about that, that is personal info that could be sussed out by unfriendlies so no issue with that per se. He shouldnt have gone in the first place is the issue and he should have come back is the other. Not that those things should really matter - we shouldnt be reliant on Dom Fucking Raab to get into or out of a crisis. The issue is him running the Foreign Office once it all turned to shit in hours rather than the weeks they had planned for

So you lot think sitting in front of a bunch of free loading MPs is the way to judge someone.... OK, fair enough but before the expenses scandal you never heard of all these committees. They were invented to legitimise their earnings (sic)
I judge a government over the 5 years in office.
I do not see what the govt. could have done differently, it was a shit show but it was a shit show that started 20 years ago, not last month nor last week. There was never going to be any winners, other than the Taliban so blame the fuckwits who started it

I think the issue is we were/are relying on shit for brains Raab. He can't really be compromised by unfriendlies after the event. The reason he was pressed was because his own dept's immediate threat report which he clearly didn't recognise so possibly hadn't read was published 22nd July and warned of a speedy collapse. The only reason he wouldn't confirm has to one of the following

1/ He knew and ignored the change in outlook
2/ He didn't know in which case he wasn't doing his job.

The mad eyed stupid **** can't even see that the refusal will just have journalists digging deep to find out the date which when it comes out will be baaaaad for Raaaab - furthermore that digging could reveal who paid £40k for the holiday enjoyed by the Minister who earns less than £90k pa.

Is he not privately wealthy?

Many of the cabinet are multi millionaires.

They aren't reliant on their ministerial incomes for their living expenses.

Plenty of freebies off their mates though.

doesn't have the usual Eton and Oxbridge background

Early life and education[edit]

Dominic Rennie Raab[7] was born on 25 February 1974[8] in Buckinghamshire.[9] He is the son of Jean, a clothes buyer, and Peter Raab, a food manager for Marks & Spencer. His father, who was Jewish, came to Britain from Czechoslovakia in 1938 aged six, following the Munich Agreement, which gave parts of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany.[10][11][12][13] Raab was brought up in his English mother's faith, in the Church of England.[10] He grew up in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire.[14] Raab was twelve years old when his father died of cancer.[15]

Raab attended Dr Challoner's Grammar School, Amersham and spent a brief period as a volunteer on Kibbutz Sarid[16] before studying law at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, where he had a room on the same corridor as future Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman.[17] Raab spent his time at Oxford "doing a lot of karate"[18] and captained the university karate team[19] and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence. He then pursued further studies at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he won the Clive Parry Prize for International Law, and took a Master of Laws degree.[20]

Yes. Very often Select Committes do excellent work in exposing a Govt’s lack of preparation and leadership on key events.

This allows people to judge a Govt during its time in office.

They are the only place the "awkward" questions are asked. Not only would he not confirm when he went away he didn't know how many were left behind - basically this was Davies meeting the EU for the first time and Johnson in a nutshell - none of them see the need to prepare for scrutiny - no details studied in advance no nothing none of them do any detail - you could see Raab is a nasty **** who doesn't enjoy having to answer questions because he thinks he is above all that.

In 2017 he had a seat majority of 23k - in 2019 he managed to take that down to 2700 - he should be worried.
