Erling Haaland

Why do people assume that our players would all suddenly want parity with a new top earner, yet I don’t see anyone saying all the rag players now think they should earn what Ronaldo does, nor when they paid Sanchez about 500k a week.

Why is it only City where everyone will want the same wage as Haaland so ‘upset the dressing room’? I bet they couldn’t give a shit. Once you have a certain level of wealth you’re far less concerned with what others earn. There’s not really that much more you can do with £400k a week that you can‘t with £150k a week to be honest.
I think this is fair. I can see if the player on those wages wasn’t working hard enough how another making less and working harder might resent it. But I know someone who is going to be likely to ensure the top earner works as hard or harder than anyone else if it comes to that: one Josep Guardiola.

How do you know this?

Tbh I reckon last sentence lacks imagination.

It’s a good point. One I’m guilty of too. I assume as we’re not like the dirty scumy rags we offer fair wages to those that deserve it. I don’t think we’ve had too many who have wanted to leave us due to wages and if they have or if anything is up for renewal we either pay what’s fair or they piss off. Perhaps Haaland coming at the wedge quoted wouldn’t create disharmony in the squad. Particularly if he started like a house on fire.
My opinion and it’s only my opinion but Kev would look at Haalands deal and wonder why he’s not on the same

I’m not sure about upsetting the squad if he earns more, unless it was clearly not warranted.
If we had outbid the scum for example and got Sanchez and paid him twice any other player that would have caused problems because he was absolutely shite once he left arsenal.
Haaland though, I reckon the players would welcome him with open arms regardless of his pay. They know we haven’t replaced Sergio and he would clearly help us win stuff which benefits everyone at the club.

Hate to say it, but who cares what the other players think? It’s a business, and part of that business is supply and demand. If you can supply something few others can, you will be in high demand. Demand creates inflated wages.

Maybe KDB could have made more money if he had said, “Nah, I’d like to leave on a free and go to Madrid, where they’ll pay me €500K/wk,” but he didn’t. Why?

His choice to accept the money.

If someone else comes along and negotiates a better deal, to which City agrees, then there’s valuable information in that.

Maybe City doesn’t value you?
Maybe City values you less or him more?
Maybe City pushed the boat out because he’s a generational talent that could help win literally everything?
Maybe the level of wages has just ratcheted up another notch because that’s the nature of the business and why you got your €350K/wk in the first place?

Whatever the reasons, there are always going to be some players in every locker room, and employees in every office, making more than others. From there, each employee has a personal choice to make, and each business has to live with any disharmony it produces.

That said, I’m never in favor of a player attempting to bend City over, or unsettling the team, and I think there is often supreme talent that is bubbling under the surface elsewhere waiting to be discovered, and it can save £100Ms.

It's £52m difference over a 4 year contract. I would say there is quite a bit more you could do with that.

I have no opinion on whether our players would demand parity.

It's not about "upsetting the dressing room" in a straightforward sense, it's about creating a culture where the signing and announcement is the victory and then winning trophies becomes secondary. Kev is on the top wages because he is the most successful player to ever pull on a City shirt, and every single person in that team knows how central to that he is. Listen to how players like Grealish and Phil talk about him, and know what they need to do and win before they get paid what he does.
like Grealish

Its a pretty massive difference.

RE parity - it does seem to be a thing. Clubs have a structure, agents will know what sort of money is getting thrown about and it changes the way discussions progress. But we are good at managing these things. I see no reason why we cant offer him significantly more than what any of our current players are on. We would just have to deal with the implications. The reality is wages are going up and up and it will happen whichever club he ends up at.

Agreed. Also, for example, Ronaldo at £500k a week is probably bringing in similar in short sales and merch. Just guessing but I doubt Martial, Greenwood or even Fernandez practically pay for themselves in that way.

U really compare Ronaldo to Haaland ? It‘s obvious that a top 5 player of all time is gettin a different wage than the average top footballer. Haaland won’t pay for himself either.

I have no idea about such things - but profits of £500,000 per week from replica shits must equate to circa 50,000 shirts per week - so that's 25 odd million shirts per year - i know there will be 25m Ronaldo Rag shirts but i'd always assumed 3/4 were fake - like Ronnie.

Pretty sure Sanchez earning 500k was the catalyst for people like De Gae asking for and getting a significant pay rise. It doesn't matter a jot that on 150k a week you earn more than almost everyone in the world, if you earn less than the guy next to you and think you deserve parity or at least closer than the current gap is then you ask for more. And if it is ludicrous differences , then it creates disharmony amongst the team. Haaland earning more than KDB would create that. And then rising KDB to Haaland would then mean those on 60% of KDB are now on 30% of KDB.... and they want more etc etc

They sold circa 3m shirts per year for the past few years bud. Pretty shit that considering they have over 600m fans ;)

KDB has already signed a new deal though. Part of that risk is that somebody may one day get paid more than you. We've essentially tied down all our key players until 2026 and beyond, I don't think signing Haaland would create a situation that you saw at United

The idea that an established pro like KDB, who's done the business week in week out for this football club for years, delivered trophy after trophy, and is recognised as the best in the world in his position, shouldn't give a shit if some promising youngster is brought in on higher wages than him is for the birds. This goes against the team ethic that this club has worked so hard to foster. If Haaland is motivated by money he needs to go elsewhere.

The issue is realistically KDB isn't a worry. He may or may not care but he's signed a deal until 2025 and no other team in world football would be willing to improve on his 400k a week. So he may feel he should earn more than Haaland but it wouldn't create a tangible issue in the side. I'm also sure plenty of players in our side feel they should be earning more in comparison to their teammates i.e. Dias making less than Stones, Foden making half of Grealish/Sterling's wage etc. But we've got our key players tied down to long contracts bar Sterling so it's a moot point imo.

You've signed a contract so tough shit? This doesn't sound like City to me.
