I think the term "squad player" is probably what people are taking umbrage at. He plays all our big games. Only Ederson and Foden played more minutes in the Champions League than Bernardo last season.

"Squad player" to me is someone like Aké. He comes in to cover when required.

I don't think you can call someone who is almost invariably on the team sheet in our biggest games a squad player

I think Bernardo is a great squad player, but I just cannot see how anyone can think he is even close to be the best player in PL. If someone would have come with 50m he would be gone. Any team in the world would take at least: Dias, Foden, KDB, Grealish for 50m. So every club in the world is blind?

If you ask here if Bernardo had a great last season, most would say he was one of the best for the team, but I just checked stats.
Mahrez, Jesus, KDB, Foden and Grealish all have: more goals, more assists, more dribbles per match, more key passes per match than Bernardo. KDB basically has 4 times more key passes per game!! Gundogan also beats Bernardo in all stats except for dribbling. Even Rodri has the same amount of goals and key passes per game as Bernardo last season. How can you be the best PL player with stats like that when you are an offensive player?

And it's not like Bernardo has the tempo to dominate like Xavi or he breaks defenses like Iniesta or Modric.

He is a great squad player who brings cohesion, great pressing and energy, but to say he is the best PL player or even the best PL of the season so far? Is everyone other than City fans blind?
I’ll repeat and repeat again and again: football is not a stats sport!

It has far more aspects to it and to individual performances and abilities that there are no stats for.

Football is a sport that has situations that might only happen once a game and never again in any game again that season, but are some of the most important things that happen in that game. There could be half a dozen of these individual things that occur that are all different to each other that just occur out of the blue that certain players always seem to be involved in but will never attain a stat for them.

Football isn’t like American sports where stats are king. US sports are played in bursts and are formulaic and robotic, where it’s all about stats. Football flows too much and has too many variables for stats to matter more than general influence on the game.

I am a big defensor of this thesis. But I also think if you are gonna be the best player in the world, you don't need to have the best stats, but for sure you need to have at least good stats for your position. My point has always been: Bernardo is a great player (and that's not shown on his stats), but he's not close to be the best player of this team, he's not the best in the world in his position, and he's even farther from being the best player in PL or the world. People were saying that stuff here, and this was my answer for those.

I bring stats, comparissons with City players, and other players. The stats are available in whoscore for anyone to check that what I said is correct. My favourite player of all time is Iniesta, so I know that stats are not everything, but when you are the worst of your team in every offensive stat (except Sterling), it's impossible to be called the best player in PL when you are an offensive player.

I call him a great squad player and that he's great for our pressing, cohesion and energy. I am not saying he is a bad player, because he is great. But thinking that he is one of the best players in the world is delusional.

I love stats but you also have to go beyond them and Bernie has become one of those players who helps to knit the team together in ways that don't always show up in his individual stats.

I don't think he is currently the best player in the league or even our team but I do think he gets in our current best XI; it will be interesting to see if Pep thinks that once Gundo is fit.

Guys.. it's not even funny when I am reading these ridiculous posts..

Bernardo bossed the midfield against Kante and Jorjinho - one of the best midfielders in the world.
Jorjinho was cornerstone of Italy`s success in Euro 2021 and Kante.. well we all know what he can do..
And Kovacic as well..

It was the most important (in PL) game City and Pep have played since Liverpool in Jan 2019 and maybe the most difficult opponent this team has played against..

But it wasn't a single match from Bernardo where he did something like that, it wasn't a FUCKING exception.. We have seen it against Liverpool, against PSG and Dortmund and against a lots of teams - where his involvement was crucial. This guy has stability - he did it in 2018 / 2019 and did it last year. If someone isn't convinced that's his problem.

So when someone is writing that Bernardo is just a squad player - it's a bullshit and even shame to write something like that, after the heroics he did yesterday and played there.. And who the fuck knows what happened during the transfer period and who paid what, are you reading Club emails or listening to board meetings. Maybe someone "smart" blocked the transfer or something like that, why you declare so proudly and assured that no one paid the money for Bernardo.

And who the fuck is Pogba compared to him - average, overpaid, overrated idiot..

Bernardo is the best midfield player in the league and no one can be compared to him.

And that's the fact. We are so lucky to have him..

Just look at this..

He goes, he leaves a Bernardo-sized hole in the squad; if there’s a single player out there that can do what he does, he’d cost a fucking fortune. And if he goes, someone else gets him, someone we might play one day. And he was a top professional before he became a top Blue, so he’ll fucking be all over us like he was all over Chelsea yesterday.

Like the song goes, I think we should pay him some more.
