The Conservative Party

All this. EU governments are already assisting their industries and their energy prices are much lower than ours. I can't think why EU prices are much lower than ours.

Gas prices aren’t lower in the EU. All of Europe is suffering same pricing issues. Main issue is for UK electricity is more reliant on gas in UK than elsewhere in EU so it’s a double whammy for UK consumers. If we were still in the EU this problem would be there for the UK.

If we expect UK government to bail out energy suppliers we would also have been in favour of the bank bailout. Same cause and effect, a fundamental lack of good risk management in those suppliers that need financial support. Similarly with companies heavily exposed to gas/power prices - it’s a risk that should have been hedged, and I find it bizarre that any company wouldn’t lock in its gate costs at least a year in advance. Airlines lock in at least 80+% of their fuel cost for the next season and about 50-60% for the season after - you know if helps them know how much to charge customers who are buying their plane tickets many months in advance- it really ain’t rocket science. As consumers we constantly lock in our primary costs to hedge our risks such as with fixed rate mortgages

Anyroad enough of the causes; the government should provide financial support to consumers who are clearly going to struggle.

One reason is that the U.K. has less capacity to store energy, I believe, but save government assistance there will surely be others.

If the Government doesn’t step in, then businesses will have to push the costs on to their customers; it’s hard to see how they can carry the costs themselves at the same time as they pay for the modernisation of their industries and equip their employees with new skills. It’s certainly a fascinating act of brinkmanship, because the moment the Government blinks and supports one area, it’s going be accused of abandoning its principles and of selling out those industries that it has refused to help.

I don’t agree with the storage argument. We closed down about a weeks worth of storage capacity. Would have made diddly squat difference here other than maybe buying us a week of grace. To drive that point home the market is pricing in high prices until April at least, and that’s because they anticipate demand will drop off as we enter warmer weather.

I thought I’d read the U.K. had less storage capacity than the Netherlands and Germany. Maybe I’ve misinterpreted it.

No we don’t have much storage but in reality storage wouldn’t have helped us at all. Comparison TTF Heren (delivery Dutch) is trading 4 times previous, same with UK NG. Storage isn’t a factor in pricing given whatever you take out you need to put back in….only useful for managing a single day spike in pricing (max a week before you’re paying spot prices), not at all useful for what we are seeing now.

Oh and also useful if some mad fucker(s) decide to cut off the pipe for a few days

Translation - commercial property owners (who happen to be tory donors) are at risk with businesses not renewing leases or downsizing their offices. Cry me a river.

WFH will need to remain if the govt are going to push the green rhetoric.

I also thought the benefits of WFH included increased productivity and a smarter use of finite resources, things that were being lauded by the prime minister, eh last week.

Such an odd and desperate request from IDS when businesses are seeing huge advantages with WFH such as increases in productivity, reduction of business trips abroad save, save on energy bills, recruiting grounds have been expanded with remote working improving skills set of potential employees. Some businesses are not renewing leases saving a fortune on office rent etc.

Well being has improved for workers with work-life balance and employees have saved costs on commuting.

I feel for small independent coffee shops and overpriced sandwich outlets that charge a fortune but advantages for all outweigh this impact. Fuck commercial property developers, they can convert offices in to affordable housing.

It will certainly help for some, but many won't - planning permission, not being suitable for conversion easily, craftsmen to actually do the refit, etc.

I don't have an answer to it, and think some can be done, but it's not something that can be done any time soon.

Its not just property owners though is it? Its the train operators who charge exorbitant fares to get people to and from at certain times, it's the sandwich and coffee shop owners and parking site operators who charge more per hour to park than a person on minimum wage can earn . F@cks given ..... zero.

Our new Health sec folks - fixing something by saying pharmacies should be able to do what they already can do - clown show of a govt

Prescribing by health professionals other than doctors has been in place in the UK since 2006. Nurses, pharmacists, dentists and some other healthcare professionals are now able to train as independent prescribers, meaning they can prescribe any drug within their competency, including controlled drugs. 21 Mar 2017
