Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

That's far left - for me - living in the US.

And is that a good or bad thing?

Given inequality has grown so much, and is starting to cause civil unrest now, people like
AOC and certain other democrats recognise the crisis that is brewing. The world post Covid is going to be brutal if corporations and rich tax dodgers don’t pay a fair share. Personally I don’t believe in quite the extent she’s proposing BUT I actually think she’s pretty shrewd and sees her position as a disrupter and there to make noise. Ask for a lot and get a little - that tends it be the way in politics and I think she knows that.

It’s good Biden is pushing countries to globally tackle this but of course he’s making compromises and reductions to get things through. AOC and Bernie want more and we probably need more but like I said, I think it’s tactical. Regardless AOC isnt far left by any means, it’s just certain individuals, media organisations and republicans want you to believe she is to discredit her.

I’d bet she’s regularly called a communist and traitor by the mid-America loons.

In fact, AOC is - by her own words - anti-capitalism. She believes that capitalism is the wrong way to distribute wealth.

And for me - that's far, far left of mainstream US politics.

No way that I'd endorse AOC.

I'm in favor of a progressive government, dedicated to the well-being of individuals, grounded in science and equality. I now favor universal health care as I believe that this is a right of all citizens.

I'm anti-gun, pro-LGBT, pro-woman's rights and so on - the left claims the correct position on - I guess - virtually every single social issue that comes to mind.

But in terms of fair distribution of wealth - I'm a firm believer in capitalism - not bullshit unrestrained capitalism - but in capitalism where possible - restraints in place - and where oligopolies exist - or indeed monopolies - government must either break up such sector dominance - or if sector dominance is beneficial - must move in to regulate such sectors much more than in cases where free market dynamics are at play.

Then I don't think you're worlds apart from AOC on your outlook. I also don't believe she's anti-capitalism in the sense she believes communism, for example, is a more viable ideology or economic measure. She's spoken in length about socialism and capitalism being able to work hand-in-hand. Her attack on "capitalism" has been in relation to inequality growth and the erosion of workers rights over the last couple of decades. She uses strong rhetoric and I think that leads people to believe she wants to destroy capitalism all together - I just don't think that's true.

My understanding is she wants "restrained capitalism too", where the wealthy pay their "fair share", where corporations have less political and legal power, where workers, particularly those at the bottom, are given fair wage and their human rights include free health care and education. Pretty much what most European countries stand for. I accept she might want more radical tax measures and workers rights' than you or I perhaps do but I still find this label of her being far left inaccurate.

Hmmm...
"I'm in favor of a progressive government, dedicated to the well-being of individuals, grounded in science and equality. I now favor universal health care as I believe that this is a right of all citizens."

This does not sound like capitalism. If capitalism did all that, and a fair distribution of wealth, you would not need a progressive government.

Even Adam Smith recognized that unfettered capitalism would not work.

No - I'm very much in favor of capitalism as it's currently the best means of wealth generation.

It rewards those who benefit society - modulo the "tragedy of the commons" and other factors which call for regulation and is self regulating. Those who perform less well given free competition are replaced by better performers. In short, I'm currently in favor of regulated capitalism.

Taxes and disbursement of government revenue in a capitalist-driven economy work to achieve my societal well-being goals.

That said - as artificial intelligence and robotics advance ever more - I believe that there will shortly come a time - say in the next 50 to 100 years - where much larger social programs are necessary.

We are approaching an age of nirvana - where ai and robotics will perform nearly all tasks beneficial to society. There will be almost no need whatsoever - say perhaps outside the realms of sports, arguably music, perhaps mathematics/physics - for humans to work; indeed robots/ai will perform most extant tasks far better than humans can.

Might capitalism play a role in this sort of future? Perhaps. But at that point it's a competition between robots/ai's as to which robot/ai collective performs best.

Just caught the special on CNN where she was interviewed by Dana Bash the other day, and it’s the first time I’ve listened to her for a sustained period, and was impressed by her her message, her conviction and her poise & personality.
She only seemed evasive a little when asked about the position of Senator, but tbh, I’d be surprised and a tad disappointed if she didn’t harbour such ambitions.

I don't agree with everything she says, but she is one of the select few politicians we have who genuinely seems to give a damn about helping her constituents and addressing some of the nations biggest issues, so for that she will always have my respect.

Plus, it's always funny to watch the right lose their minds over her because...I don't know, she's a minority female who dared to pursue a position of power?

Nail on the head. A lot of them can’t stand to watch a smart young female Latina achieve so much and it scares the shit out of them. It’s brilliant to watch.

I just love her !!
Her and Bernie Sanders are my fav US politicians. Really wish to see her president of the US one day. Hope she will be the first female president one day.

I love her too but she'll never get elected in the US. To become the first female president you'll need to be right of centre. If Bernie can't make it past the Democratic primaries then sadly AOC won't, never mind getting elected as president.

Agree - she would have to seriously moderate her politics.
