Erling Haaland

I’ve heard a few people say Liverpool can’t afford him

Can you explain why as I don’t get it? Their turnover is about the same as ours, so how can we afford it & they can’t?

We've spent £792m net on transfers since Pep took over.

Liverpool have spent £292m.

However much money they turn over, it's clear they don't have the spending power we do, self-inflicted or not.

Their highest earner is currently Van Dijk on £300k a week - Salah has been asking for £500k a week and Liverpool are struggling to get anywhere near it. They could try to sell him next summer, going into his final year, but they can't be that stupid.

Haaland wants to be the main striker, so would argue he won't want to be vying with Salah, Mane and Firminho.

More worryingly for Liverpool, they already have key personnel heading into their 30s and no major asset to sell outside of Salad to raise significant transfer funds like previously with Suarez and Coutinho.

The biggest difference between us, Liverpool's owners take plenty of cash out of the club, whereas, our owner doesn't take a penny out and everything we make is reinvested.

It is insane that they're risking losing Salah over what amounts to something like £8m a year difference between their offer and his ask. One of the best players in PL history, their biggest matchwinner and only global superstar and they're fucking about over 1.5% of their turnover.

Correct. Their owners are also big proponents of MoneyBall type system.

The further expansion of Anfield will also be costing them another £80m.

Luckily for them they still have around £2.4bn left from those 2 transfers, they'll be alright!

It's even more insane he's been on £200k a week for yonks and Thiago is paid more.

Even Trent Arnold is on £10.4m annually.

Liverpool have a tough decision to make because he is now 29 and they would have normally sold a player like him for big bucks previously.

They also fear Mane, also 29, will be coming to them soon and asking for stupid money with only two years left on his deal.

This is a present Liverpool team that will get old together. Henderson, Milner, Thiago, Mane, Salah, Van Dijk. Nowhere for them to go now.

nothing more to add, xlnt summary. No doubt many will squeeze in a raft of "ah but yeah but", the staple diet of forums in general.
For me, the mystery remains the inability of richly gifted players to put the ball in the, or even keep it near the target. Most of them can thread a pass, land it on a sixpence etc, in open play......why do they lose that skill in front of goal? It's almost as if they never practise scoring......say it aint so

I think if he was a free agent, City would give him a 5 year deal on the spot.

Look at players like Vardy, still lightning fast at 34, modern sport science and conditioning is keeping these players at the top longer and Salah is so much more than his speed anyway. A good coach would adapt his role as he ages to make the most of his dribbling and finishing.

I know they want to control the wage bill but Salah's performances are so far above everyone else that he's making it almost impossible for Mané et al to claim they deserve similar.

I think the issue they have is that Mane is in his final two years and already on £200k a week, so whatever Liverrpool arrive at with Salah, Mane is still gonna be asking £300k a week or letting his deal run down.

It would have been interesting to see Salah in our team, absolutely perfect in terms of what we face each week.

They can buy wisely and replace those players. I mentioned in another thread I think they will go in big for Bellingham. They have Konate. A forward in a few years and they won't be far away. Perhaps Haaland is not a priority for them right now. Let's not forget, Haaland may not fit into our way of playing. Look at Lukaku for Chelsea. They look better when he is not in the team. Lots of variables going on, but personally i hope we get Haaland and that he can fit into our style.

I think Bellingham is way too expensive for them now. He'll be over 100m. United will be looking to replace Pogba soon, that seems more likely to me, or maybe Chelsea.

Liverpool prefer players in the 30-50m zone with those 2 anomalies Van Dijk and Alisson brought about by the Coutinho sale.

Bellingham is going to be thick end of £100m when Dortmund do decide to sell.

Those types of deals are presently too rich for Liverpool's blood, they can't afford to part with the assets that would raise that type of cash.

Salah and Mane will be there for a good few years yet and Liverpool will try to tread water with them and Klopp.

Because of how slow Liverpool are rewarding players with improved wages, they continually find themselves in this very awkward poistion of stick or twist. Happened on Sterling and Suarez.

Their main players are heading into their thirties and unlike City, they don't have the funds to replace them, nor allow them to walk away on frees, outside of Milner.

Ah ok, so what you & @domalino are actually saying is that whilst they can afford his fee & wage, their business model will likely restrict them to making an offer?

Would that be an accurate summary?

It's sort of bizarre that circumstances beyond our control have contrived to put us in the box seat and, arguably, the most attractive of his suitors.

Sancho being moved on, thus Dortmund not needing to sell, cost prohibitive, aligned to Haaland's personal terms.

Levy refusing to budge on Kane.

Chelsea signing Lukaku for £98m.

Salad scoring goals for fun and holding Liverpool to ransom to rightly pay him what he deserves.

Mbappe shortly moving to Madrid.

Barcelona skint and crumbling.

United signing Ronaldo and already having Rashford and Greenwood. Regardless of Cavani being out of contract next summer, Haaland isn't joining a club who are not challenging for the top honours.

Bayern have Lewandowski and Haaland won't stay in Germany.

Paris because of their own financial resources, the loss of Mbappe, the ability for Neymar and Messi to play out wide, are clearly the main threat to City.

Major advantage over PSG is the league.

Haaland wants to play in the premier league I can’t see him going to ligue un. I think his dad will get involved.

In the main, although with also an £80m commitment to a new stand extension, I don't even think they can afford the wages of Haaland or any incoming elite star.

I think it's more a case that they can afford him but the way their owners do business they won't be laying out that kind of money for Haaland or any other player

I must admit that I wasn't even aware they were haggling so much over Salah's new contract. I just expected them to get him signed up on whatever he's asking.

I know this is the Haaland thread, but reading the last several pages regarding Pool's financial tight spot and ageing squad woes when coupled with their needed stadium investment and also that likely by now City's scouting department has proper cyber-security... well it's done wonders to cheer my morning up.
Good day to you all! :)

I said last year when they were struggling that their time at the top will be coming to a stop if their owners don’t start spending money. 2/3 years Klopp will probably be gone and Salah, Mane, Van Dijk will all be in their danger years and they will be at risk of getting left behind. I think they may be considering selling Salah next summer, just who would be willing to spend £100m+ on a 30 year old.

...with just 12 months left on his contract
