The Conservative Party

Once again they spend several days talking about why this can't be done and why its the wrong decision then they U-Turn - Why the fuck to ministers and back benchers allow themselves to be made to look complete fools by Johnson and his number 10 machine?
Testing public approval. Leak it to the press and see the reaction. Make decisions accordingly.

Just populism - no way to run a country - however I am still baffled by my MP Simon Clarke as last as this afternoon was prepared to make a statement that now makes him look even more of a **** than he normally does? You only have to talk to people around town to know that he is despised by fold that voted for him. Some dislike his personal conduct in recent times - others feel let down by Brexit not delivering and there are a lot of people here on UC who worry about running a car to get to their low paid job and heating their homes.

22 definitely voting against was half the majority, and it's been a main story all day. The Lords sent it back to them again, as the Lords tend to be pretty solid on what makes sense.

Having said that, I suspect the 'progressive reduction' that will be made statutory will be feeble. The directive they are making statutory was a directive to OfWat as of the next price review, so it'll be a surprise to me if something meaningful comes out of it.

Clarke, just another one of Johnson’s clan spreading positive propaganda on his behalf. Didn’t he work for Raab at some point, probably says all you need to know about him.

Not aimed specifically, it’s what they do with the majority of issues. As the public I like to know what’s going on but the way they go about has just made everything ridiculous. Learning what is going on from many in the media without it being passed makes a mockery of our political system. We used to be shocked if things were leaked, now it’s become the norm.

Yes, quite agree.

The bills nowadays are rushed, poorly written and often short-term, usually requiring amendments afterwards, and full scrutiny isn't always possible.
Part of the quality issue is because the really clever people who knew how to write them have moved to somewhere with better pay/working conditions.

The briefing and leaking is at almost absurd levels - as I see it, the purpose is simply to create the positive image so the reality already has an existing public perception to break down before making an impression on people.

Yep he did - he is a fucking arsehole - for a 6 and a half foot guy he is remarkably invisible in the constituency hence his electorate are falling out of love - last election he was something like 4% down on his majority - still healthy but that should have been a warning to him. He is close to Ben Houchen the Tees Valley Mayor - another vacuous Tory mouthpiece - which is odd as Clarke's constituency takes in South Middlesbrough - nothing to do with Tees Valley - but that Mayor is an independent who has been re-elected a few times so there is nothing in it for Clarke, the Tories or Houchen for him to for a collaboration a Mayor who actually has an influence on his constituency

Almost certainly they’ll be leaking the good bits so you actually miss the bad bits. Just like a magician, they want you looking one way when the real story is in the other hand.

I still find it amazing that conservatives have so much pull up around that area. It must be a haven for large detached houses for all those who are in the top percentile of UK earners or is it more to do with Labour being perceived as letting the constituents down?

Yeah a lot of 5 bed detached went up about 10-15 years ago - last few years though its been 2 and 3 beds - lots of incomers and lots of self employed - the town is wall to wall with contractors vans who are sole traders who are doubtless about to be hit quite hard.

Yeah. Labour to blame for the last 11 years. That's how the Tories won the Red Wall.

Or - it's our shit and we're the best at clearing it up. (Been the same since the Poll Tax.)

They won’t have enjoyed the furlough then, wonder if they’ll now turn LibDem?

That’s why I say ‘perceived’, we all know how this works.

The reality for the public is the budget will be read by a tiny minority of people and even less will understand the implications of it.

We seem to think on here that the public are like us and they monitor every aspect of what comes out of Parliament but the fact is they don't at all.

Politics itself is actually a self-serving industry, the politicians fight amongst each other as though they're fighting for every vote but for many people that vote has already been decided. The period between elections is where engagement drops to the lowest and in that period the unfortunate reality is that most of the public don't really give a toss.

The public perception from this budget will be exactly the same as every before it, Labour voters will hate it, Tory voters will like it and that's before anyone reads it.

Daily Telegraph scathing in the wasted £37 billion on test and trace , no doubt the Government will get a free ride from the country , meanwhile anybody claiming any kind of benefits will be vilified and subjected to hate from the very same people.

Just a guess but the next buzz phrase is " its still too early to say " - said it 3 x in pmq's and we are about to mins in - handy as it can apply in many circumstances

The budget speech is just gaslighting and magic money trees.

What's this "debt is down"?

Rishi is an expert in polishing a turd.

Hopefully Reeves and then Blackford will then expose the smoke and mirrors for what it is.
