James McAtee

The way the academy is going, if he wants to leave. Let him, we'll have another one along in a season or two..

not sure I agree with that. No guarantee we’ll have another as talented. We’ve only had a few in the last 15 years.

We’ve got one of the most talented young players in Europe, who’s also a city fan. We should do everything we can to keep him

The academy is starting to bear fruit in the CM position year in, year out at the minute, its also the strongest area of the first team. Foden, Palmer, Doyle, McAtee, Lavia, all outstanding at that level.

They will be, if he wants to go they cant stop him. An extension with guaranteed loan move will prob be likely if he wants to stay here. The progression map seems to be 1st team traning/Occasional Bench stage as Palmer was last year for now just needs to see that pathway and decide what he wants.

you say bear fruit, but the only players from those players you’ve listed who has made it is foden. They might all be outstanding at youth level, but doesn’t mean they’ll be good at senior level

I agree with what your saying and I hope he does make it

Yeah, be interesting to see who turns his head thats gonna give him a better football education than Pep at this stage, the pathway is opening might just be a timing issue for him in that position, if only he was a striker or leftback right now.

if hes going better to sell him than lose him for free

We need to give this lad a new contract and either play him more or loan him out next season.
We can't afford to let him leave, he's too talented and we would pay a fortune in the future to replace him.

Hes been offered one, he aint signing (yet). He's outstanding at the level hes at, definitely needs better competition soon.

Maybe it isn't just about ability either, it could be about mentality / maturity around the senior squad. I have no idea but Pep has mentioned a few times recently talking about Fodens maturity and mentioned Palmer and Grealish need to think about their dedication to the game in their persoal lives as athletes ( don't think he was suggesting they don't ). I wonder if Mcatee hasn't shown enough of that side yet.
As I say complete speculation from me but there is much more to stepping up to the first team for all players than just ability.

I agree.
Not all young professionals are 100% professional.
As fans we don't really know which are or aren't, we only see the finished product.

I can understand McAtee not signing if he cannot see a realistic prospect of getting minutes. His decision needs to be made based upon what is best for his career and there are good examples of staying (Foden) and leaving (Sancho).

Maybe he is a bit miffed that Palmer seems to be getting more opportunities with the first team? A loan move would be a good option and worth doing even if he does not sign a new contract before going. It will leave the EDS a bit short of goal scoring power unless Delap manages to get fit.

Hopefully he's looking at the big picture.
Sterling is probably off and Mahrez and Gundogan are getting on a bit so the opportunities should be available soon, if he wants them. All he's got to do is look at Phil and realise that if you're good enough and put in the work you will be rewarded.

We can't let him leave on a free and risk him going to the rags or dippers though.

I'm not remotely worried whether he signs or not. He's just another good prospect, one of many around the world.

If he (or his agent) doesn't think he's going to 'break through' at City and wants away, good luck to him. Just get a share of any future profit. We should only want to keep players who genuinely want to be at City.

If he wants to stay and work hard to win a place in match day squads, good luck to him.

I disagree with the comment, 'he's just another good prospect'.

He's the epitome (along with Foden and Palmer) of what our academy is about. A born and raised mancunian who has exceptional footballing ability and is arguably the best in England at his age - in his position.

You can't replace that with kids from around the world. They don't have the same DNA.

However, you're right that if he wants away then I'd wish him luck and take the profit. Which would be a major bummer as he's going to be a Premier League level footballer.

I see him in the gundogan role at the moment He dribbles to much and loses the ball a lot he needs to learn to pass move and run with the ball at the right time! I’d love him to sign a new contract and in the future have him foden palmer and delap starting. If it’s “just” more money he wants I feel we need to pay it if it’s not ridiculous amount!

sorry he is no epitome. putting Foden with the other two is a bit of a disservice to him as he is a generational talent while the other two will be very good players hardy irreplaceable.

He could well be the best in the world in his age group. Unfortunately, until he actually 'makes it' In the senior game, McAtee, like Cole Palmer and many other youngsters, remains just another good prospect.
The next step is the hardest. It's all about following good advice, being patient, working hard, and not getting injured. He's still got a long way to go and external pressures (ie media hype) can have a negative effect.
Phil Foden is a great role model for him and Palmer to follow.

Do you think Livramento made a mistake leaving Chelsea to play regular first team football, even though Chelsea were desperate to keep him?
