I guess the defence is whether Hamilton was following rules of following the safety car either.

I thought at the time it was naughty from Verstappen going side by side under the safety car. Commentators said FA at the time.

if Mercedes protests are upheld, then Red Bull never legitimately won the race in the first place, so it's not taking any off them that they earned.

If they aren't upheld, then they won in the eyes of the rules, if not the eyes of anyone who actually watched it.

If the result stands, Mercedes have only themselves to blame. The title is decided over a season and in the first half Mercedes made several strategy calls that cost Hamilton points.

I would be pissed if I was the guy winning and not happy being the guy who was given it either. Ultimately no one wins from this

You have to let the others catch up then are told you have to run the last bit up the Mall barefoot

Would be great TV though. Seeing the leader who was 1 hour 35 mins ahead, being overtaken in the last 100m by a guy in a Mr Blobby costume.

True, but it's irrelevant. If someone breaks a world record, but then it turns out the clock is dodgy, they would have that world record removed from them. They wouldn't keep it on the grounds that they didn't do anything wrong.
