Common sense would say it's not a big deal, but these minor technical infringements are usually the ones that get punished fairly consistently. It was like Hamilton's wing being 0.2mm too short after Brazil qualifying.

I imagine it's why Mercedes bothered to bring it up.

No one is actually debating the facts so a Hamilton or Verstappen supporter can tell you them.

There is a rule that the safety car can only go off the lap after everyone is unlapped and all 20 cars in in order.

The FIA restarted the race with 1 lap to go without everyone unlapped.

If they'd followed the rules, the race finishes under safety car and Lewis Hamilton wins.

As Rosberg quite rightly highlighted, Verstappen was trying to let Hamilton know he was there and knew the left side of the track coming up would not help Lewis in the tow.

Especially so, as there was no DRS for two laps anyhow.

Absolutely crooked. The guys who drive these rockets are mental gymnasts, they process information at speeds mere mortals cannot comprehend.

Same as last week on the brake check, Verstappen is doing it right at the moment he knew the line was coming up for DRS.

Nobody should underestimate the multiple processing and calculating which is done by people who drive 180mph into a blind corner in the wet.
 
As each minute passes I'm thinking one of two things is going on behind the scenes.

A) FIA are frantically finding a way to uphold the result and reject any appeal by Mercedes.

B) The decision to give Max a penalty has already been made and now they are lining up all their PR ducks to prepare for the shitshow that will follow.

Max knows exactly what he's doing, his problem is he doesn't know where the line is.

It's murky but it's basically this. The argument is that Masi (race director) let a small amount of cars through to unlap specifically so that there was a final lap shootout. The rules state that either all or no cars should unlap, nothing in between.

The exceptions are usually down to safety reasons, and it's unlikely that was the motivation.
 
FIA dismiss protest regarding breach of article 48.8 about overtaking behind safety car

FIA do not believe either car was on full throttle during alleged overtake.

Masi got a delivery of red bull and one if they cans was full of African diamonds is the only logical conclusion
