F1 Season 2021

On a slightly different note, and for the benefit of a fairweather F1 fan like myself, has it always been full of so many penalties, appeals, complaints to FIA officials etc mid-race? Or is it a more recent trend driven by more camera angles, replays, social media etc?

From all sides it seems rather petty at times and this behaviour would seem to open the door to appealing smaller and smaller potential incriminations going forward? There must have been a time when the race just went ahead and everyone largely got on with it, a la football pre-VAR?

its nothing to do with fans of lewis and max winning. its about taking and changing the rules in a instant and giving it to one persons hands. he clearly was giving a big advantage to red bull and max in a one lap shoot out that was not on a level playing field that Mercedes could not control or change

Its been way too toxic since Silverstone and Monza. Hamilton accused of almost killing Max, Max parking his car almost on Hamilton's head and not checking to see if he was okay.

Press loved it though and they've been stoking this 'rivalry' since. I'll still be following Lando and Dan, am interested in how Alpine will do, but i've lost interest in the main prize. Too hateful.
 
Well it's been quite a day and thanks to everyone who has contributed to the discussion on this thread. It makes a nice distraction from football. I'll say congratulations to Max, he's a great driver and it's been a really exciting season. However, I can't leave without saying that Hamilton led that race from the 1st to the 57th lap, and would have won the race, without the intervention of the race director, who made a decision in contravention of the FIA's own rules, in order to favour one driver over the other. No blame on Max, enjoy your title.

As for the FIA, you know exactly what you've done. And so does everyone else.

But people will watch it, the same way everyone deems football is corrupt and still watch it religiously.

If anything it could bring new fans in like me. Loved the drama today. I like how everyone is forgetting Hamilton still had a lead, in his own hands and lost it.

wouldnt say Hamilton lost it and it was in his own hands. No way Hamilton could hold off MV on his tyres

How did he have the lead in his own hands? On 45 lap yards v new softs?

He didn't, the second they restarted it that way he was done for.

sorry didn’t realise any tyre stuff came into play. F1 virgin here. I meant it as he was in the lead when they started again and then lost it but obviously know now it’s as he was at a disadvantage still.

the lead was taken out of his hands and that's the problem ? clearly lewis was faster today and red bull could not catch him in a fair way ? the race director helped red bull and max knowing lewis was on dead tyres at the end
what should have happened was red flag the race and have a 5 lap shoot out with both cars on new tyres
 
Thie rules in other sports are daft it’s like a team being 3nil up then an injury stops the game for 10 minutes then the ref turning round and saying next goals the winner due to the 90 minutes being up

Max was pretty much guaranteed 5 secs on that one lap race and they removed all traffic (lapped cars) in front of him that Hamilton had to fight to overtake and none behind him

Which would have unethical but at least moral compared to the shitshow we got
 
You know the sport is dead when the discussion after each race is not about racing. Just like football talk is less and less about football. Two ruined sports that unfortunately are engrained parts of millions of peoples’ lives. Difficult to abandon them even though you know they’re crap.

I hope you don't expect every race to be like today. Today was a right royal FIAck up.

Hamilton was yards ahead, that was obvious, but due to safety cars and a (personal opinion) missed opportunity to put a new set of Hard compounds during the VSC, the race result got away from him. I think Mercedes didn't because (at the time) they were quite aware of Lewis being behind Perez and Verstappen had they brought him in and wanted to avoid any potential 'collisions'.

The second safety car just bunched everyone up and eradicated Hamilton's large lead over Max who then switched to softs. Without that, he'd have still won even on those threadbare hards.

i think they will take it to court even knowing they will still lose ?
because they will want to make it a big issue and a statement vs FIA to never do that sort of thing again or else they will pull out of F1 for good. they will also want the rules changing and taking the race control out of the race director hands and maybe changing it to a panel with clear rules
 
The wrong bit of 48.12 is being discussed. It is not any/all that matters but the black and white timing.

The regulation is explicit about when the race can be restarted.

It states: “Unless the clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap.

The lapped cars unlapped themselves on lap 57 so the safety car should not have come in until lap 58, which was the end of the race

That is 100% clear and shows how fucked up the whole thing was
