Guess I’ll be off work for a few days. Coughing and stuffy nose. Also got a stick showed into my nose by a nice lady this morning, so now it’s a waiting game.

3.5 is the vurrent case doubling rate in days for Omicron in the UK

You've asserted that twice this morning.

It's incorrect. So far the doubling time has been two days or less. I have you two reputable sources upthread.

It would be helpful when quoting numbers you give a source. Otherwise, it appears you're just making them up.

Have you had the three jabs and if you don’t mind how old are you? Be interesting to see how you get on if you can post updates, cheers.

Denmark should have excellent data because they sequence more than anyone else, we're just behind them in the world stakes on that. Funnily enough the Omicron epicentres now are here and in Denmark.

I have no doubt that current Omicron cases are going to be far higher, probably 10x higher in many respects because sequencing only happens in perhaps 5-10% of tests. That is acceptable though because we test perhaps over 10% of the population on a weekly basis.

It's very likely that we'll start to see testing quirks in the data now where Omicron seems rare in other countries but that's actually only a product of a lack of testing and a subsequent lack of sequencing.

In any event, positivity rates have been climbing rapidly over the last month so it seems that Omicron is taking hold.

I dont doubt there data is solid. I just think its not as bad as some commentators are making it sound due to the wording of there document.

But as you say, we're not going to have to wait long to know for sure.

Sir John Bell (Oxford) just said on Radio 4 that they’re anticipating the results of a large study from South Africa later today. Should inform us better about the severity and symptoms of Omicron.
I had a semi sleepless night last night and BBC news is broadcast from Singapore overnight, around 3am they were talking to a male & female in the medical sphere over there who were almost doing handstands about how less dangerous it was (2 out of 3 admissions to hospital were 'serious' but only 1 out of 4 with Omi, they added that the rise of infections was virtually over.

Didn't catch any names and seen nothing on the BBC this morning.

As others have said SA isn't GB or Europe but they were really upbeat, suppose we'll find out in a few days....all this talk of a week or so and we'll know more started in late November well, it's 2 weeks since then and it's still the line being peddled.

We have a Govt. who are popping up in the media and have no idea of figures day after day, Raab today with his hospital totals, yesterday Javid was all over the place with figures. Whatever happens it's been a shitshow.

Interviewee I heard this morning said that in South Africa, 50% of young men 20-40(?) are currently reckoned to have Omicron, albeit the overwhelming majority are untested. If that estimate is accurate, U.K. society will likely grind to a standstill in the next fortnight.

As per my question above about Sweden, I find it ”interesting” that there seems to be very little news about omicron in Europe, was only a couple of weeks ago we were hearing lots about spikes of covid in most European countries now nothing other than references to SA.

Jeez, according to Matty over on pre game thread our game tonight might be off due to covid in City camp!

Bugger.

Unfortunately, this is what happened last time around, and the time before. Remember our game vs arsenal being cancelled when arteta got it? Remember them taking schools to court to stay open in the face of mass outbreaks?

The government didn't shut anything down, but the virus took over and stopped things regardless.

Unfortunately, the virus is entirely unmoved by rhetoric. Even if the govt doesn't impose restrictions, we end up with the virus imposing its own.
