How can the government justify cancelling medical appointments such as cancer screenings, just to boost people who don't need jt? Omicron is a mild variant. It's all for profit of big pharmaceutical companies.

The general publics blind willingness to take anything Boris says as gospel is scary.

The “big pharma” line is a bit conspiracy loon for my liking, but I do have an issue with serious medical appointments being cancelled for this too.

I swear we've been saying we'll find out in the 'next few days' how it could play out for a couple weeks now...

If there is 200k new Omicron infections every day then we should be knowing about it imminently...

You're entitled to go with the ONS but everything else you've posted is wrong.

How is anything I said wrong? I've worked with a couple of Actuaries in the past and the description of "risk assessing accountants" is verbatim from them. they were there to risk asses investments at a pensions company I worked at for a while when I couldn't get a job in my chosen field.

As for selective data to prove a point. they removed 5 weeks. 5 weeks? why those 5 weeks? its not a quarter, its not a month, its an arbitrary period of time that didn't suit them. if they had just done the last 6 months then fair do's but 5 weeks? that's the very definition of selective data.

The reason the ONS are excluding 2020 from there average calculations is so we see a non biased view or this year to give a "non pandemic" view to compare against. by including last year they are artificially increasing the average and not giving a "non pandemic" comparison.

I don't recall the same policy with the delta variant, which became dominant in the UK in June. The red list stayed in operation for some months after delta became dominant.
Obviously this is just my personal opinion on reasons why they removed the redlist. and I feel dirty it actually aligns with the official stance.

back in June the Gov got a lot of slack for not red listing quick enough so probably left it on longer than needed. this time around there is a lot of political pressure to remove quicker from around the world.

That's Boris the proven liar too. I cant believe so many don't think Sunday night was about politics and getting his Christmas piss up out the news.

In my morning read of the news I found an interview with a member of the JCVI who said that boosters provide partial protection after 7 days, but the full effect is not seen until day 14.

So if you've been boosted wait at least 7 days to alter your behaviour.

Makes sense as it was 2 weeks for the original jabs to take effect so no real reason to think these would be different but I bet most people wont realise.

“Alter your behaviour”

Jesus Christ.

If you had a million pound in the bank, could you confidently stake every penny of it on there being absolutely nothing sinister behind all this?

Honestly, I don't think I could.

the only conspiracy rabbit hole i've kind of gone down is that this come about from the lab in China

Been thinking this myself - feels like we’ve been waiting ages for info on severity, etc, that was being touted as only a few days or a week away. Plenty of positive stories for sure but nothing concrete as far as I can tell.

As for the last bit, while I don’t think there are currently 200k Omicron cases a day in the UK, more and more people seem to be testing positive recently.

They're obviously scared to death of a press on hospitals over the next month which is quite likely to happen and a slow uptick is occurring now.

Even if Omicron is milder, it's still far more transmissible and that will always potentially translate into increased hospitalisations. The vaccines just don't work for some people hence why we've been seeing 800-1000 admissions per day and 100-200 deaths per day since July although obviously the unvaccinated are a big part of that.

At the moment we're doing okay because of who is catching COVID and right now that's predominately young kids and families. It's therefore highly probable that we'll see a case drop over the next week as schools close but we'll have to see.

The problem ultimately is next week all of those families and young children will likely be mixing with grandparents, vulnerable people and other families so it makes sense to ramp up the boosters as it's the only defence unless we stop that kind of contact altogether.

My sister in law and my colleague both positive yesterday.

Admittedly, one is out with gangs of mates every night and the other has three kids in primary school, so they’re top of the list to catch it.

Dr Jenny Harries, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, has told MPs the Omicron variant "is probably the most significant threat [to public health] since the start of the pandemic".

She adds the world is probably at too early a stage to be able to tell how serious the increasing infections will be turn out to be.

The numbers and data coming out in the next few days will be "staggering" when compared to other variants, she adds.

A few of us on here were saying a few days, and early data did start to come out of South Africa around then and the WHO were pretty quick on the immunity escape side of things.

but official lines from a lot of places was "it will be a few months before we know if its more virulent"

'Next few day's' Bingo again.

Going to start taking shots when it's mentioned.

I googled that this morning and found an explanation of what they do...

They take the latest confirmed new cases, then they look at the most recent ONS data that comes from sampling, and use that as a way of finding what the shortfall in the reported cases are likely to be (check against data for the same time frame in the reported data). Then they use the S gene drop out estimate, and allow for witnessed growth that would have taken place since the person first got infected to when it showed up in testing. It sounded reasonable.

I suspect it was in the Guardian so I haven't linked it!
