Have now read a little more of MacCulloch.

A section of Chapter 23 is entitled ‘Slavery and its abolition: a new Christian taboo’.

Here is an extract from it:

‘Frequently Christians had felt that being a Christian and being a slave were not compatible, so that it was an act of Christian charity to free slaves. But that is very different from condemning the whole institution - hardly surprising since the Christian Bible, both Tanakh and New Testament. unmistakably take the condition of slavery for granted.

The author goes on to cite the story of the drunkenness of Noah in Genesis, which he says has served as ‘a useful prop to the institution…Apart from its popularity among medieval Western preachers, who saw in the story a pleasingly ingenious allegory of Christ’s Passion and human redemption (Michelangelo uses it thus on the Sistine Chapel ceiling), this story was regularly trotted out by slave traders, both Christian and Muslim, to justify enslaving Africans, children of Ham [Noah curses Canaan, son of Ham, and all his descendants to slavery in the Biblical narrative].’

Well I think that the problem is pride , man thinks he is wise in his own eyes. We so often deny reality and don't face up to ourselves so that we get to the end of ourselves and resolve to turn to the Almighty.
Everyone is religious in that they have an ideology to promote. Atheists believe matter comes into existence uncaused. It is delusional. But that doesn't stop it from being promoted in every university , school government etc. Others we the same ilk say we get reincarnated incessantly and finally into annihilation , existence memory obliterated. Pretty grim. But what is the best ideology? What is the truth?What is the true faith? They cannot all be true because they are so different. Christ says His Word is true. He tells us not to be proudful as none of us can boast. We have all done some not so good things in our lives if we are honest . Our pride stops us from admitting it. But He has provided a joyful blissful way out of that despair if we can humbly face reality.
 
One of my happiest memories from my childhood is the carols and the message of Christmas at primary school.
We were Catholics but my Gran had a massive falling out with the local priest so, when we moved from Crumpsall to Bury, she sent me to another faith school. This time it was C of E.
It was lovely, and I'm not going to apologise to anyone for what she did. She had fallen out of faith at that point but still recognized (for her and me) that another Church school was a good move, whatever the faith.
She was right.
That school and it's approach to life have always been a fantastic anchor in my life.

It didn't need a propulsion system as it was supposed to stay where it was and drop when the water subsided.
Ah, but it ended up on Mount Ararat, so perhaps a propulsion system would have been in order.
Why did it end up on Ararat? Why didn't it just continue to float down to the new sea level as the water subsided? Possibly because god works in mysterious ways, but not half as mysterious as those who write the bullshit.
And where was the water before the flood? That much fucking water couldn't possibly be held in clouds.
The Med floods, it flooded, end of.

Like I always say; stories of gods, goddesses, prophets, angels, demons etc. can be explained with the celestial solar and lunar calendars, or occurrences. So all the other stories of religions will likely have very ancient roots in natural phenomenon and disasters that have had spiritual and deified stories attached to them.

All passed on through the generations for thousands of years, eventuating in them becoming widespread and engulfed en mass into religions.

We can see from tooth examination of early human skeletons, that our niche as a species was to scavenge bones left over from carnivore kills. We ate the marrow as our primary source of nutrition.

If so what about termites, I think it is only fair that they have a chance on the last boat to salvation.
