Coronavirus (2022) thread

Countries around the world have all dealt with the pandemic differently and set their individual policies accordingly. Some countries tolerate a low death threshold, others tolerate a higher death threshold; that’s the trade off when protecting individual liberties and an economy. Only the people in those countries can truly judge the success of their decisions.
Unfortunately we've done badly on both death and economic impacts.

Not sure how easy it will be to disentangle the impact of the pandemic and Brexit from the UK’s economic situation, but England also seems to have prioritised the protection of individual liberties, though, again, that may sometimes be hard to disentangle from economic needs.

There are literally no tests to be had so i would be wary of any drop in cases
Probably the case but the hospital numbers above are a bit better today though so that is more important. And the numbers to watch in coming days.

But we can’t read too much into that as the day has a Y in it and there are patients not being counted as there are staff shortages etc etc

Actually I just looked deeper and there were pretty similar Pillar 1 & 2 tests today and yesterday.

2,028,014 today V 2.045.857 yesterday.

And FAR more than the 1,496,886 last week

So up a third week to week is not really no tests available.

In fact the last two days are the highest EVER and the first time they have been over 2 million on one day.

I was surprised it was a record high too but school testing again atop everything else will be why.

Nonetheless shows that if there is a shortage that will be seen in coming days and is clearly not a factor in the numbers today.

The number of deaths in the last 7 days where Covid is mentioned on the Death Certificate is now only 54% the last 7 days total of deaths within 28 days of a test.
The published government stats on deaths are broken.

Surely if no tests are available then rather than thinking it means nobody can test, what it ACTUALLY means is that we are maximum testing capacity hence why it’s 2M+ tests a day and gone up from recent weeks?

200 Armed Forces personnel are being deployed to support the NHS in London as hospitals grapple with staff shortages.

Military medics will assist NHS doctors and nurses with patient care, while general duty personnel will help fill gaps caused by other absences.

anyone feel like this is close to the end now ?

obviously the mounting pressure of NHS from backlog and staff shortages will take a while, but as for the actual virus it feels like its drawing to an end...
Talking with some friends last night I mentioned that I am increasingly regarding Omicron to be a 'super vaccine'.

It is so transmissible that there will be little avoiding it over a period of the next few months - it will have essentially achieved herd immunity

I know that will not sit well with some - just how I am starting to view it

I don't think feeling awful after a viral illness is anything new. I've had bouts of flu in the past and it has taken months to shake it off, the cough in particular. They now call it long covid but before nobody mentioned it.

Sounds like our bunch of jokers could learn a thing or two from these South African scientists, who would have thought it.
