This is genuinely the worst measure of a player possible, but I will say he has one of the best highlight reels of a young player I've seen coming to City. Torres had a couple of good skill moves in his, this guy is pacing and scoring around the pitch like R9 on speed. I think there's something about that which makes me pessimistic, somehow. Like, it's easier to believe that Argentinian league defending is just jokers rather than him being that good.

But new year, new me, positive mind-frame: this guy makes Messi looks like a clown and will slot right in with some Pep development.

I am most impressed with his positioning and movement which seems beyond his age. added to that he has the finishing of a accomplished striker.

The group stage of the Copa Libertadores (which is when RP starts playing) starts in April, not in a couple of weeks.
Even if he plays all of the things you described, it still won’t change that “he’s a guaranteed starter for River but not for us”. And all that experience will be nothing new for him; he’s already played it all a few times. I don’t see anything that justifies him joining later rather than now, or in January rather than in the summer
Obviously as a River Plate fan and not City I want to respect everybody on here.I have tried to be very respectful and give information that would help City fans know what is happening nothing more. This Brasilian person was uneducated but this post shows me that he is not in Brasil or at least knows nothing about South American football.Julian wants to move to a huge club in Europe but he also wants to play the Libertadores with River and the Mundial with Argentina. For him its a big advantage playing for Argentinas biggest club with lots of game time in 2022 while for River its great to have him and for City its great to ensure one of the greatest talents in the World today

If Argentinian defenders are jokers it wiil of put him in good stead to face "The Slab" in a derby

Something to consider that might put the whole "defending in Argentina" into perspective is that, in 2015, Tevez came back to the country to play for Boca, at age 31, fresh out of a CL final appearance with Juventus, and never had a season like Álvarez had on the last one. In fact, in 2015, Tevez did a lot worse numbers wise in the Argie league, than the previous one in Italy.

I'm not saying defending is better in Argentina than in Italy, but I think it goes to show you that it is not like any half decent forward can come and do as he pleases.

The Argie league can lack skill because all the young prospects are sold quickly, but it will never lack order, heart and, if needed, nastiness to defend.

dude forget about all the negative nancys here, they just want to have a contradictory view point just for the sake of it. for the rest of us here tell us more about the player we are getting. I am more interested in a couple of things how good is he on the touch line holding the width? if he plays as a right wing how does he do because there are signs one of sterling or jesus are going so that might be a chance for getting game time. also another question how fast is he at top speed compared to some player?

The lad is an interesting player.

I know it's YouTube, but a pattern never lies. He has a touch of the Tevez/ Jesus ball retention running style with a touch of the Aguero finishing.

A truly interesting hybrid of a player.

I'd like to see how he does with defenders that don't go to ground as much as South American defenders do.

I blame Guardiola for changing that style of football in England!

“Known as 'The Spider', due to appearing as though "he had more than two legs" when dribbling the ball at first club Atlético Calchín, Alvarez also adopts a Spiderman-esque celebration when scoring.”
Did we not have an octopus play for us for a season or two, Fernando, was a misdescription in that particular case! His tentacles for tackling non existent!

Really reminds me a bit of Negredo. Which is very exciting for me. I absolutely loved Negredo and his bullish acrobatic style. He also moves a little like suarez but definitely has some shot angles similar to aguero.

Hes got potential...

Having finally joined the fray, I’ve decided to actually watch some clips of this guy…

So far the things I’ve noticed are:

1) Definitely more like a play making forward, could play across the front 3, probably why Pep and the board like him, he likes players who can play multiple positions. Probably means a more traditional 9 is still on the cards.

2) It’s refreshing to see a forward who can use his weaker foot, seems to be comfortable passing, crossing or shooting on it, especially good from a central player.

3) Honestly just solid all around. Decent acceleration, shooting, and presses well. Could definitely see him fitting in. Even if not 1st choice, I could see him breaking his way in. I still want a traditional 9, but I also like the idea of paying cheap for a young player and turning them into a superstar… we seem to be good at that.

What I liked from the clips was that he seems to strike ghe ball while running onto it. I like the idea of our players taking chances on their first touch.

A few in our squad take an age to tee up a strike.

See, I can’t say anything now because if I do, the usual suspects will show up calling me all sorts of names. But I was ridiculously offended by you. You joined the forum less than a week ago. Have some respected for the people here.
Nothing you said matters. Of course River Plate wants to count on him, but he isn’t a RP player anymore (sorry to say!). So Julian wants to sign for us but continue to play South American competitions? Yes for River it’s great to have him, I know. But that should be irrelevant. My point was that a player like him, if he wants to be relevant in Qatar and not just on the bench, he would be better off playing in Europe where most of the players he will see at the World Cup are.
I’m going to give you an example you will understand. Flamengo’s Gabriel Barbosa/Gabigol, a player I am SURE you know VERY WELL ;), also has received a few offers from European clubs and all of them were turned down. And there was a discussion here in Brazil. He wants to be Brazil’s centerforward in the WC but because we only see him play against South American national teams, the manager doesn’t have an idea how he would do against European rivals or even African and Asian. The way our calendar is set forces our teams to only play among themselves for the past few years. You know this as well as I. Even time for friendly matches is impossible to schedule, so our teams will arrive in Qatar, in a way, untested — including certain players.
Ferran Torres, whom Julian is replacing, was a very important player for Spain, in their starting XI, while playing for us, even though he had limited game time and was in the bench a lot. And I think Julian would have benefited from playing even if sporadically against much tougher opponents.

Good fee. I’m slightly concerned about his suitability for the league. He’s not very tall and he looks pretty lightweight. At first glances, he also doesn’t appear to have that burst of acceleration that will allow him to go past defenders (though I could be wrong about that). He seems pretty well rounded, and his finishing looks decent enough. He looks like a Sanchez or Tevez type player to me. However, those two were very physically strong.
