Why are we loaning him back then, he should be in our first team if he's that good
Because the Argentinian League has just finished and the Copa Libertadores(South America's version of the champions league) starts in a couple of weeks and runs until October.River want him for that. It's also world cup year and Alvarez has a great chance of getting in that squad.

He's a guaranteed Starter for River but not for us. If River make it to the final and he makes the world cup squad he'll of played football for non stop for 18 months so it makes sense he has 3 months off and then joins us next January.

It seems if River are knocked out early he will join us in July or maybe go on loan until the world cup to increase his chances of going to Qatar

How great would it be for him to star in the Copa and the world cup and for everyone to then realise we have him tied up for £17 mill :)

The group stage of the Copa Libertadores (which is when RP starts playing) starts in April, not in a couple of weeks.
Even if he plays all of the things you described, it still won’t change that “he’s a guaranteed starter for River but not for us”. And all that experience will be nothing new for him; he’s already played it all a few times. I don’t see anything that justifies him joining later rather than now, or in January rather than in the summer

Think the world cup in November is all the explanation needed.Seems fairly straightforward.

He isn’t starting for Argentina either, whatever he does in South America or Argentina this year. The best chance he has at a bigger role would be playing for us even if playing much less. He would be seeing and facing players that he will see in the WC at the PL and the UCL. The way the calendar is set, South American national teams can’t play against European national teams even in friendlies anymore.

It is and it's part of the reason City were so reluctant to sign Ronaldo. We have too many attackers, we sold Torres because we didn't need that many attackers. Sterling, Jesus and Mahrez have less than 18 months left on their deals, Alvarez is about future planning. Securing a guy we rate very highly for an unbelievable price in the anticipation that we'll soon be losing attackers.

May or may not be true but that has nothing at all to do with squad spaces, where we are light and 2 short of the full quota or limit.

I disagree we have too many attackers. Midfielders, maybe. But it is semantics who is what in pep's team.

Maybe River Plate asked for these things before negotiations got seriously underway ? City, after weighing up the options, were happy to go along with it in a spirit of fostering good relations for a swift conclusion to the deal ?

We're signing him to secure his signature now. City know they don't have space in their squad to add an attacker as it stands. We're waiting until a space opens up and then drafting Alvarez in.
Chances are one of sterling, Jesus or Mahrez will leave in the summer which means we'll want someone for the right side.

Maybe we don’t want to bring anyone into the squad for this season. Who knows whatever the reason we don’t seem to be in any rush neither does he or his club . Everyones seems happy, so alls good.

There’s a chance, but also a good chance non of them leave as well. Personally think we’ll start next season with all 3, Sterling the possible exception.

They can ask anything, but his contract is up at the end of this year. The most they can ask is a fat check

But even if he doesn’t come now, why not guarantee that he comes in the summer? Some things about this seem very weird to me. I don’t buy the “build good relations” excuse given the circumstances

I’ve no idea. So I won’t waste time trying to work out. There will be reasons, we might get told when the deals done , we might not.

Hard to say, they all have contacts running down though.
