Running thread

My covid symptoms were mild. I was just absolutely nackered. Wanted to sleep all day for about a week. Went out and took it easy but HR was higher than it would be usually for the pace. A few aerobic runs and it came back. I'm not a hugely experienced runner so setting PBs isn't too tough as it started as a lockdown hobby. But I am 8 weeks (net) into my marathon training and am now quicker than I was after 4-5months of consecutive running during lockdown.

Take the pace off and just gradually build the fitness back, clearly some are more impacted than others unfortunately.

im glad you said that, I raced my best ever 10k time in local race last weekend.

but every time I walk, run I’m shattered

Also, how are those taking cold showers managing to regulate their breath?
This is a known problem when people enter cold water.
I'm not sure that you're meant to, to be honest! I heard some professional person suggesting that you stay in the cold shower until you breathe normally and that's typically between one and two minutes.

I really like the BBC health podcast 'Just One Thing' and there's a great episode on this very subject (it's only 15 minutes long as well):

Im not so sure about the throw a few hills into your training theory, I do get a bit of hill training done, in fact I actually prefer them any day to a pancake flat run.
I think it might be that as the Manchester mara is so flat for a long time that your legs and mind just acclimatise to flat and hitting what wouldnt usually be a problem is a bit of a head fuck as you dont expect it and have to kind of change tac on the fly.

Hill sprints are worthwhile for general form and strength but plodding up and down them is probably not that beneficial. It's the mental side for me. I know my training routes are tougher than the marathon course, so hopefully will be able to tackle any inclines having been faced with a couple of miles of continuous hills and needing to battle through.

Doing everything in my power to prepare for the day, but with no fuel that 15miler on Sat was tough and I don't feel too great about needing to find over 10 more miles in 8 weeks!

Thanks for the cold shower tips/podcasts folks.
One month in doing cold showers - hard to determine any results at this stage but it definitely perks me up in the morning.

Park run at the weekend felt a little laboured and I'm currently just doing my Weds night running club and Saturday morning Park Run at the moment. Easing back into it but will try 10k soon.

All this complimented by weight training/gym work, yoga and pilates btw.

Real quickie folks:

I was looking for a watch to take running (and track other exercises).
Don't want to spend a fortune and I'm not over fussed with many of the metrics tbh.
I just enjoy staying fit and tracking distances and PBs/improvements.

Was looking at the Garmin Forerunner 745 as my mate can get discount bringing it down to £320.

However, Apple have reduced the price of the Apple Watch SE 44mm to £260 (or less for the 40mm version) and given I use apple products anyway I'm thinking this might be a better option. Seems to cover many training options and swimming.

It doesn't have the more sophisticated heart and oxygen options of the forerunner (or indeed the Apple Watch 6/7) but I'm not overly concerned I need those.

Thoughts?

Amazon do pay monthlys if your wanting to invest in a decent garmin watch.

Was my birthday at the weekend so wanted to treat myself but not go over the top.

just think outside of running/training I’d get more joy with the Apple Watch.

The Nike running version looks like a steal I think.

I must admit I am a massive fan of the Garmin watches and one thing I have loved about the newer versions of Garmin is being able to download runs to your watch and then follow the route on the mapping function.

A lot or races have their own Gpx files so can download the route, create your own route and then follow it quite easily and if you do go the wrong way the watch buzzes etc to warn you.

Really opened up another level of enjoyment to my running. Just downloaded the Portland coastal half marathon gpx file over the Isle of Portland and along Chessil Beach. Something to think about if you want to shake stuff up a bit or just want to visit new places as often runs go through some of the best beauty spots.

Yeah my friend is too…in fact quite a few are fans.

I went for the Nike Run Apple SE in the end (purchased earlier this evening from JL) as I felt I’d get more out if that’s given I have other apple stuff too.

I usually spend an age umming/arring/researching but I just made a quick decision for once :)

Thanks!

Afternoon All

I hope everyone's training is going well, I am training for the Manchester marathon again to raise money for Cancer Research. Last October I did it in 4.19, was a bit a dissapointed I didn't get under 4 but targetting a sub 4.

Sadly yesterday evening whilst running in Sale I was hounded by a group of lads in a car who called me a faggott.
It upset me quite a lot but I'll be back out tomorrow with my running shoes on and I'll be at the game tonight.

Hi Mate, 4.19 is a very respectable time, I wouldnt be disappointed at all, Im always saying the folk that dont wizz round in 3 hours deserve more respect than the ones that do, its much harder to stay on your feet and keep going for the longer times, keep up the training for the sub 4, you will get loads of good advice off this thread(prob best not to take mine to seriously!!)
As for the bunch of knob heads, you just have to find a way to let that get out of your head, they certainly wont be thinking about it(prob more where can they find the nearest greggs) a good long run is the best way to clear your head as Im sure you already know, just remember they are the knob heads not you, and maybe leave the tutu and pink leotard for race day?

Well done mate on raising money for charity and such a great cause as Cancer Research.

As for your training keep plugging away and Im sure you will achieve your goals. I would say with the Marathon, and we all get hung up on times, the real achievement is being able to run 26.2 miles. Its a fantastic effort whatever you do.

As for the goons in the car we have all had it. Not worth a second thought in all honesty. Look at how they behave to eek some enjoyment out of their day. Just be glad you are doing something productive with your time.

Best of luck with your training and keep us informed how you get on.

Belated happy birthday mate
