Russian invasion of Ukraine

Sorry but what does this show?

Him walking off after his speech?
Correct, and the Republican Party using it to make out that he’s weak. It’s fucking bizarre.
They need to come back when he starts announcing that he believes Putin over his own intelligence services.

Maybe he should have side shuffled off stage so never showing his back?

or been surrounded by others and snuck out behind them?

It’s a good move but it’s important we now don’t have to read the usual political point scoring posts that we have seen.

Plenty of threads for Tory bashing.

Bollocks, you can take the thread out of the sub forum but you cannot take the sub foum out of the thread ;-)

Great words from Tom Keatinge from the defence think tank Rusi “we have taken a peashooter to a gunfight” re sanctions to date.
Or maybe it’s Alan Carr vs Ivan Drago.
I am sure most people know that how this plays out in the short term will determine the longer game for Russia.
Putins remarks about the old USSR are chilling. The former USSR Baltic states is where I fear all out war May began and end.

All through this current crisis, I keep seeing images from Rocky IV with the US and Soviet flags and all that nation v nation stuff.

Still, it's good to see that the West are 100% united that they won't stand for it. There was an oddball interview on R5 last evening where some analyst said that Putin is the first Russian leader who doesn't play chess and hasn't thought enough moves in advance!

Russian empire, not USSR, he actually blamed the USSR for ukraine sense on national identity.

The baltic state and findland should probably be worried if we let him annex the ukraine but other ex soviet state are probably of no importance to him, even for a loon he knows his limits

Do you genuinely believe the Russian population are 100% behind him with all this? Furthermore the Baltics and Finland? Today there is far too much freedom of information available for him to be able to "con" his own people.

He will need to tread very carefully else, he will be having to fight fires on several fronts and I'd include some of his Army in that number too. I do not think he has the control of the people that he would like to have.

Can only hope that they are thinking if they step outside the separatist controlled areas then we go big. But given Putin has already said he recognises the whole Donbas region which is what about 2/3rds more than currently held by the so called rebels that has to mean he plans to break out entirely even if they stop at the Donbas “border”.

Makes no strategic sense to not have gone in harder and I mean the west in general, not just the UK government, whom have been tepid. Only ones with any credit right now are the Germans IMHO.

I think some conflict within the Donbas region is inevitable, hence the call up in Ukraine. You don’t march 200k troops to a disputed border and expect no tension or conflict. At this stage, we can only hope it doesn’t extend beyond Donbas, albeit that is easy for me to say and is cold comfort for those in the region and for Ukraine as a whole.

There is strong public support for Ukraine across the political spectrum in Germany. The German left seems far more realistic about Putin than the left in the UK or the US. Perhaps being closer to the problem focuses the mind. I think Nordstream is dead for the foreseeable future. Politically it has become toxic.

Equally the US right seem to be fully on board the Putin express along with some Brexit fans in the UK who seem more motivated at seeing Putin ‘humiliate’ European leaders or blaming the EU (Lord Owen in the Express) for daring to accommodate the wishes of the Ukrainians, as if self-determination is not something Ukraine should aspire to.

Given the reaction here to the Govt sanctions and reality not matching the bombast, I expect there will be additional measures announced.

No, where did I say that he waa backed 100%

you read far too much into an innoculous post about whether he wants to create the russian empire or USSR.

Remember two weeks ago when half a dozen in here said the US and U.K. intelligence services were full of shit and it was all a load of bollocks to help Boris and Biden’s news cycle at home?
The absolute certainty from many of them that Russia wouldn't invade would be comical if it wasn't such a serious subject.
