Social media wars have started, lots of russian twitter pages posting videos of surrendering solidiers or tanks being allowed through the border by gaurds.

Ukrainian reporters told that targeted messages sent to soldiers saying the goveremt has left and abondonded them so go home and you will be safe from death.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are genuine videos of this though.

Oh yeah I expect some will surrender, when you are there in a small batalion with assault rifle and a fleet of tanks roll in some will weigh up the survival odds and go fuck it.

However the video going round of a lone soldier climbing out of a ditch waving a white flag is so staged

FWIW I believe the prevailing view of historians now is that appeasement bought Europe 3 years to rearm and prepare for war without which we'd have lost.

It's not a view I share. Appeasement allowed Germany to rearm from 1934, to the extent they laid waste to most of Europe in the three years which commenced WW2.

The war would have been lost until Japan bombed Pearl Harbour.

The mobilisation of the US to be able to fight two major wars in Europe and Japan at the same time, demonstrates the huge output that country was able to afford the war effort.

Absolutely.

In my post, I effectively said it was too late now. But I am not sure that is necessarily correct. IF - and it's a very big IF - we were to come out right now with the biggest ever set of FUCK OFF sanctions, literally throwing everything possible at him, then I think it could be possible to limit him to only taking Donetsk and Luhansk, and not a wholesale invasion.

But these sanctions would need to be announced like right now, before it's too late. And I don't think we will, and therefore he will just take the rest of Ukraine whilst we standby and watch, muttering about how terrible it is.

As much as nukes may have prevented war due to MAD this is the other side of the coin where everyone sits on their hands and let’s Russia do what they want out of fear of what would happen if they stepped in. Fucking ridiculous this is happening in this day and age.

Current Russian military doctrine involves using nukes as part of conventional warfare.

I'm not sure he's daft enough to invade Poland or any NATO countries just yet.

The Ukraine has always been an easy target for him and unfortunately The Ukraine is just a guinea pig to see how much he can get away with.

The Estonia PM has just been on TV and she said there is no military bulid ups on their borders. I think even his closest advisors would be saying it would be madness to invade any NATO member countries now

The closer the missiles are on launch the less chance there is of them being shot down by any ballistic missile defence system.

Ban all business and trade with Russia or Russian companies.

Delist all Russian companies from the stock exchange.

Expel all known allies of Putin in the country and seize their assets.

Remove Russia from the global banking system.

You get the UK, US, France, Germany (and with them the whole EU) to commit to that and Russia is back to the 90's in a month.

No good for Ukraine though. No air support, no cyber support, limp sanctions imposed on Russia… and we’re basically just letting them get wiped off the world map.

Not particularly saying that we should be sending troops, air support etc. to Ukraine, but Ukraine’s one hope will not be helping them so they’re gonners.
