Russian invasion of Ukraine

Tranch2 of the sanctions is already being played down as "not yet the full package" - there must be some players in these Govts who are so deep in hock to Putin's mob they will still be defending them
or shit scared of what information putin has on our government that he might release if we do what we're supposed to do and impose proper sanctions

He's one man and I know he'll surround himself with yes men and bodyguards but surely there must be powerful men at the top who can take the lunatic out? None of them can think this is good for the country or themselves surely?

Really - Stalin did that then had regular lethal purges of the yes men around him - you'd think that would work but he got away with the tactic as did Hitler. Like buses you may have to wait quite a while for the one you want to come along

I can think of several high ranking members of a certain political party in a certain country with ties to Russia. Including their slightly orange colored former leader

Or we could forgot the prospect of WW3 and worry about partygate? Right oh.
Not sure why we need to forget anything. Dealing with the consequences of a war in eastern Europe is the top priority. Having competent leadership in this country that is equipped to make the right decisions about our response is part of that priority.

Do you not think that Trumps approval of Putin's move just reaffirm the likelihood that Putin has that video of him clapping two prostitutes pissing on a bed just because Obama slept there?

It still has one foot in the Soviet days though, and especially regarding trust.

One person can't do this on their own. Who can you trust? Who would shop you in immodestly? Who would spy on you to out all the enemy's then go and tell Putin's men the truth?

I doubt many of his men (and he's removed any powerful men that don't go along with him) are loyal to him. It's not in the nature of people like that. But they are loyal to their own survival, wealth & power, which will all be just fine if they don't rock the boat.

Heavy sanctions to the point where they don't have the above, the situation changes...

When I served in the BAOR it was common knowledge that if it kicked off we had a 26 minute life expectancy, couldn't even get down to the NAAFI in time for a pint with that timeframe.
At least it was not enough time to get piss wet through and exposure sat in a sodden trench.

Damn right - grown ups can concentrate on more than one thing at once

Cash is worth nothing if you can't spend it. That's why you cut them off from world trade. Billions in the bank don't mean anything if you can't buy food or cars or medicine with it.
The Chinese, Indians and Middle East will still be willing to trade

I honestly don't think any of his supporters would give a shit about that any more. I think his approval stems from what he really thinks and is related to the Russian money that has allegedly propped up his businesses.

I think they no longer give a shit about the West.

Our leaders have shown us to be completely weak and ineffective at stopping this. They'll just be trying to manage the fall out.
We, in the west, have been shown to be as weak as piss.
Putin can do what he likes, we won't even try to stop him

My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people. Their lives have been irrevocably changed, they are the innocent who have done nothing wrong. Imagine having to leave your home not knowing when or if you will ever be able to return again, or if it will still be standing. I can't begin to imagine what fear they must be feeling.
I am not religious but will be praying for them today.

Taught some Ukrainian teenagers from Kyiv a couple of years back and they were absolutely fantastic people. Kind, warm, funny and fundamentally family people.

I hope they’re doing ok in this shit show.

Cannon fodder sadly.
I watched a documentary about war a while back and there was a US army general on it who said something like; “In times of war the lives of men don’t matter. The only thing that matters is the military objective. If people have to die in order to achieve that objective, it doesn’t matter as long as the objective is met. Even when the army needs food, it doesn’t matter if they have to take it from the mouths of someone else who’ll die to give it up as long as the army achieves its objective. Even if thousands have to die on the front line in order for a small few to break the opposition line, it doesn’t matter as long as that line is broken at some point if that’s the objective.”

Hearing him say that just makes you realise that we are nothing, each of us as individuals mean nothing to the wider scope of war and the objectives of war.

To Putin, or any other world leader or military leader, the lives of young men like those captured in that Twitter post don’t matter. It doesn’t matter to them whether they’re killed or captured or sent back, all that matters is the objective being met. They are literally cannon fodder.
