But you can't eat gold or dollars, and I think even the hardiest of Russians will get sick of eating rice from China after a few months!

Whereas your last few words would be pleasant to many of us, it'd give him time to cause more evil....I'd prefer a quick death maybe hit by a train, ripped apart by lions, firing squad, dipped in acid etc.

These sanctions are doing nothing but telling Ukraine they are on their own, barring usual lip service and empty gestures lighting up monuments in Ukraine colours.

The least we can do is rub them off the map when it comes to being a participant in the rest of society.

agree. It’s very depressing for the ukraine. I keep seeing politicians/ mps and others talking about sanctions. Right now they are doing nothing for the people in the ukraine. They are completely on their own

if you aren’t in nato / are a smaller country your screwed

I think you're both right, i think we see what we want to see and the filmed protests are probably from a minority of the public sentiment, but it must be one of the most public displays of dissatisfaction of Russian foreign policy in.....100 years??

times may (or may not) have changed, the Chechnyan war was Putin's announcement to the Russian public that he was their man, which they lapped up, while the Georgian war garnered a lot of support but not as much as. However the Crimean annexation put to bed any forming trend due to its general popularity. The next 7 days will show us whether the appetite for this conflict is sour or whether these protests are, whilst very brave, just a kneejerk of a minority.
 
One thing I would ask is whether western countries will be willing to put up with sanctions for how long when we also start to feel the impact?

Make no mistake, sanctions on Russia will start to hurt us here at some point and it'll be interesting to see how much bottle we have.

Things are bad enough as it is...inflation etc...pandemic debt........I fear how people can afford energy costs from now on.

Feels like we are going back in time. No heating, Hiding from the rent man and fear of war.
 
What is this we? NATO led bombardment of Iraq and Libya in recent history. Of course we should be against this aggression from Russia but we do not have to lose all kind of independence in this.

What should worry us all is that Putin and the Russian government has been enboldened by Western weakness and I do not think there is a logical way out of this conflict. They will depose the Ukrainian government through sheer force but what then? It's an error of judgement by a nuclear power and that's chilling.
 
Western governments aren't prepared to exert real pain on their own people as we are too reliant on Russian Gas and Oil. The G7 can't even agree to shut the Russians out of SWIFT as it will damage their own economies. But never mind Downing Street was flying the Ukranian flag lol. Putin has played the west. He knew Johnson and other Western leaders were weak.
