I think the best (or at least worst option) will be that sanctions eventually have such an adverse effect on Russia and it's people that Putin is overthrown. When that madman is gone then it will be time to talk about self-determination for Ukraine again. Sadly, that may take some time :-(

I think that's one of the things that has caught Putin off guard, the will of the Ukrainian people.
They've even got prominent Ukrainian stars taking up arms, Zhan Beleniuk a greco-roman gold medalist in Tokyo 2020 (now a politician) has taken up arms, Klitschko has taken up arms, Usyk went back to Ukraine to see how he could help.

UN's main weapon is the Security council including Russia and China. makes it a tricky to do anything, Russia obv wont do anything and China likely to back Russia.
