Russian invasion of Ukraine

So they're now threatening Finland and Sweden directly with military action if they help Ukraine and join NATO.

People are naive if they think this ends with Ukraine.

Russia/The USSR has shared borders with NATO states since the creation of NATO in 1949.

It really is bizarre to me that Putin thinks this line about NATO bordering Russia being an attack on Russia is going to convince anyone abroad or at home.

Russians know they shared a border with Germany for 50 years.

Whilst I agree in principle, I'd say a couple of things:

1. Paid for how exactly? and
2. The west as a whole has fallen SO far behind Russia in terms of conventional (i.e. non-nuclear) forces, it is beyond a joke. It would take vastly more than simply topping up our forces a bit - it would take years and years of huge spending increases to get anywhere close, in so doing, crippling our economies. I mean, just look at this. The UK (with 227) doesn't even get on the list. France and Germany are not much better and not on the list either.

How on earth do we threaten Russia when we have 227 tanks?

Loving the name of Taiwan there ;)

Your point was that Ukraine have a democratically elected leader and Iraq didn’t? Right? And therefore it was ok for regime change using war in Iraq, but not ok for regime change using war in Ukraine? That’s what you’re saying?

and because I asked you if it was ok for regime change against a monarch, I’ve lost an argument? An argument about what exactly?

Give it a rest for a while pal.
No-one is interested in your nonsense.

The ironic thing is that the excuse (at least one of them) for this invasion is the eastward expansion of NATO. Yet by invading Ukraine, NATO will now be plumb on Putin's western border. Russian and NATO troops will be eyeballing each other on either side of the Polish, Hungarian and Romanian borders.
You’re making the assumption he’s not going to take the government out, have an election and make them sign something that says they can’t join NATO, he’ll probably annex the east too.

I personally think that’s what he’ll do anyway, we shall see.

He can’t rule it, he knows he can’t rule it.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen someone more wrong and quite so belligerently and against so many people before.

Would love to see him try and explain why Ukraine and Russia are in the wrong to this bloke:

It's so mad this.

The only 'western' comparison I can think of is if Arnold Schwarzenegger picked a machine gun in real life and staring mowing down bad guys in the middle of Los Angeles.

Absolutely bat shit crazy, there's no more words for it.

You know this is nonsense.

If the the government ramped up domestic production of weaponry and funded it by MMT how on earth would it cripple our economy?

The UK, USA and Canada leading the way with real sanctions (demanding the removal of Russia's access to SWIFT) but the EU are holding it back. Such a cowardly and bureaucratic organisation. We've allowed Russia to get its tentacles firmly gripped on Europe and a sovereign nation will disappear as a result.

Not Europe, it's Germany, Hungary and Italy.

Need the backing of all members to agree for something like this.

He's just pissed off that ex-Soviet territories want to join NATO and in the case of Ukraine, with its large Russian-sympathetic population. He sees this as a direct threat to his own power over the Russians in Russia.

I know you talk nonsense ;-)

Life is luxurious in North Korea and in Russia with their massive defence spending of course.

These lists mean absolutely nothing.

The west hasn’t fallen behind Russia in military spending at all.

The United States spends $770 Billion per year on the military to Russia’s $60.

They outspend them 10-to-1 for decades.

Nato as a whole spend well over $1 TRILLION on the military every year compared to Russias $60Bn.

BBC 5Live had a general on yesterday who said NATOs military is 10 to 15 times stronger than Russias and not just in size but it’s far more advanced technically.

Just to really drive this point home, NATO publishes how much it spends on defence every year.

Since Russia invaded Crimea, NATO has spent 7.950 TRILLION dollars.

Russia has spent 400 Billion.

So tell me again how the West has been letting its military slide despite spending 19.8x more money!

Sadly the vast majority will be shit scared kids, barely trained and lied to like the rest of Russian society and their families will be seeing them brought home in body bags and for what?

Putin is one evil ****!
I know what you mean but if one of the cunts was staring me down outside my front door and I had a gun in my hand I'd happily blast the twats head off with a clear conscience.

I say this in a hypothetic scenario, because I'd have been over the border and a million miles away long before it got to that.

I didnt mention tanks as we don't need thousands of tanks, air superiority conquers land power everytime. One ground attack aircraft can take out many many more tanks especially obsolete ones.

I realise they'll be very young but you know what, fuck 'em

UK has one of the biggest defence budgets in the world but it’s Bluemoon and like the game in which we get beat, page after page of how we need to buy the guy who scored the winner because it’s what we are missing, we now have to have 10,000 tanks because Russia has that many.

We are in NATO, we have access to far more than that in reality, as well as bodies on the ground, planes in the air and ships at sea etc

Saw one report today of a Russian mother saying her son was made to join and thought they were just doing training drills.
