Russian invasion of Ukraine

Buys his stuff off China? The Chinese probably hold the key to bringing this to a quick end. If the western powers can get China on side Putin really is toast.
You’re unreal, 2 mins ago you said it’s too difficult to get Germany to buy its fuel from elsewhere, and now you’re saying the answer is for china to come on board with the west against Russia. I know which one of these 2 options is really the most difficult

Breaking: Ukrainian military source claiming Belorussian special ops forces are loading onto airplanes for air assault on Kyiv and Zhytomir. "It will mean that Belarus joins Russia in its invasion sovereign Ukraine", says source

I wonder if they are misguided in their thinking on this. Seems to me that there is almost universal support for whatever measures need to be taken. People recognise that higher fuel costs and maybe some other hardships are a very very small price to pay in order to maintain peace in Europe. What is the alternative? Allowing Russia to take Poland, Sweden and any other non-Nato countries he fancies? Or how about all out war?

If we need to have a few power cuts or whatever, this is IMO well worth it. And as I have said before, if the government can find hundreds of billions to protect us from the effects of COVID, then surely it can find a few billion to subsidize energy bills for a short period.

as I say its about their ability to explain to people what is the right thing to do - and probably speaks volumes about the quality of the "advice" they receive.

On the bright side, despite Germany’s seeming reluctance to impose a swift ban on all russian banks, their words about increasing defence spending to 2% of gdp, and supplying weapons to Ukraine, are most welcome.

Edit, although I note the Ukrainian ambassador has just said said too little too late and that Germany had been vetoing NATO arms being supplied to Ukraine for years

I didn't say it would be easy, but China' s trade with the west in 100 times greater than what it does with Russia. You tell me where their priorities lie.

They certainly don't want this war in the Ukraine.

Ukrainian government ombudsman Lyudmyla Denysova says more than 210 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and more than 1,100 wounded in Russia's invasion.

"With unseen cruelty, the enemy is destroying residential buildings, hospitals, kindergartens and schools, taking away the right to live from the sons and daughters of Ukrainian land, including children," she said in a social media post.

Denysova gave examples of some of the civilian deaths, including a child killed in the shelling of a hospital in Kyiv, and a woman killed after a missile hit a residential building in Kharkiv.

She called for Russia to be “punished severely for these crimes”.

“Ukraine is noting down all these facts and will pass them on to the military tribunal in The Hague," she said

I’m bored with you now clb. I have been very clear that Germany’s own minister for the economy said 3 days ago (probably 4 days as it’s taking a while to sink in) that they could source their energy from elsewhere. As regards China stepping in to stop russia, good luck with that one

If I was 25 years younger and likely to be more of a help than a hindrance (which I sure as hell would be nowadays) that would be something I would seriously consider.
I've probably got about 30 seconds of windmilling left in me. Other than that I'm prepared to hold coats.

As I said it’s only “selected” or “certain” russian banks. It definitely begs the serious question why not ALL russian banks
The NATO countries are propped up with Russian money. They will put enough sanctions to appease the public’s unrest but not enough to actually harm their own countries or cripple Russia. Political balancing act. It’s a grey murky area and as such the decisions will generally reflect this. Only Putin deals in absolutes.
