Russian invasion of Ukraine

This is not going at all well for Russia, militarily or politically which will be a huge surprise to Putin and the governing elite. Would not be surprised to see Putin overthrown as a way of out of the shot he has created. Only chance they have got to save some grace and move on. M
Set Russia back for decades this will
Not necessarily - If some hero was to act now - remove the mad lunatic, assume authority and say he/she wants to repair things with the West and of course Ukraine. It's actually an ideal opportunity, albeit in tragic, terrible circumstances.

Actually it's called ratcheting up the sanctions bit by bit. Don't let the truth get in the way of your opinions.
That version of “truth” is also your opinion. It does not matter what term is used. Not 1 country in the world will stop taking Russian money.

I can’t see any way out of this that doesn’t involve his removal (either by arrest or assassination). He doesn’t seem the kind to accept defeat, and if backed into a corner doesn’t seem the kind to worry about anyone else. I hope someone in Russia takes the opportunity.

There are different ways of playing politics. Just because the U.A.E. decided to abstain does not mean they support the tyrant. Don't let idiots like Delooney use this as a weapon against the club and its owner.
You realise the UAE has been involved in bombing Yemen for the last decade don’t you ?

Had a blazing row with my youngest boy this morning, him talking about his friend and him going to help Ukraine as part of this 'foreign legion'.
He has no military training whatsoever, he's studying law at Uni ffs, what would he do, read to them ????
I'd imagine it's all talk & just young mens bravado, well i hope it is.
Then i think about Ukrainian parents & their children taking up the fight.
Not sure i can stop him if he's determined to go, hopefully he'll calm down
Has he got a season ticket.....? Just asking......

Ukraine is isolated in terms of boots on the ground. That said, Ukraine are getting a lot of intelligence help and would have been informed of Russia’s plans to invade and surround Kiev, weeks ago. Commentators have tried to make out that Russia’s invasion was a surprise but it was nailed on.

it’s been reported in the press that the Ukrainian army has destroyed a convoy of Chechen special forces / Russia’s kill squad. If that is true then I think the Ukrainians would have benefitted from military intelligence from NATO countries. These things don’t happen by chance.

Weapons support to Ukraine is increasing but it might be too late.
There will be SF guys over there.

I’m genuinely moved by what many ordinary citizens are now doing across states in which they know they face crackdowns from leaders in Putins pocket. It’s incredibly brave.

As with Maidan, we are hopefully beginning to see the seeds down of what could be a whole new world at least in Europe.

Main battle tanks (MBT) have practically reached a dead-end in their development.

The Russian T-90 (a development of the T-72) has had some incremental upgrades since it’s introduction 30 years ago. It is Russia’s MBT.

It’s supposed successor, the brand new design T-14 has been in development hell and general production limbo since 2016. Though reasonable production and deployment has started.

the US Abrams has been incrementally production upgraded since its introduction in … 1980. There doesn’t seem to be a brand new replacement on the horizon.

the uk challenger II is from 1998 and some will be upgraded in near future to III specification, the rest used as spares/scrapped.

there’s also the German Leopard 2, the French leclerc , and iirc quite a few other homegrown ones - Japan, India, Brazil …

I think the tank , or at least the MBT, is at the end of its life.

I’m surprised there isn’t a MBT drone from anyone in the works… or a medium tank drone at least. But perhaps there is at some skunkworks.
From it's specification, the T-14 is a step change in tank design. Probably exceding the capabilities of Western MBTs. However it looks like the Javelin long range and NLAW short range anti tank missiles are taking a very heavy toll of Russian armoured vehicles.
The NLAW especially is extremely dangerous to armoured vehicles, as it fits in the back seat of any car making any car a mobile anti-tank unit. It also doesn't need specialised training like the Javelin.
You have to advance slowly with infantry protection and then exploit break throughs something the Russians have not been doing so far.

Why is it? If you are abled bodied and the correct age, then you should stay and fight or be seen as a conscientious Objector

There is a world of difference between a conscientious objector and someone unwilling to sacrifice themselves in the face of overwhelming odds and the certainty of death.

That's essentially a dictatorship.

What good is someone who is terrified and has no idea how to fight, they are basically cannon fodder.
It’s a time of war and their country has been invaded. I’m sure even the most experienced army general doesn’t want to be in this situation, and sure many privates who have previously voluntarily signed up to the army are terrified.

Unless you have fair reason not to fight, you should have to fight for your country against invasion. That includes women too.

What good is resistance when not everyone who can possibly resist is resisting? You may as well just surrender from the outset if that’s the attitude of some citizens.

You also don’t have to fight, you can be there to help. Bring food, medicine and arms to those fighting. Help to move dead and injured bodies, help the medics save the lives of the wounded… help civilians who are staying behind (the country has 40+million citizens and only 370k have left so far)… Everything helps.

But if you can pick up and fire a gun, kill some Russians, take down a helicopter, blow up a tank, that’s what helps the most! The more people can do that, the more the resistance resists!

Some things never change unfortunately, power hungry old men sending young men to die on behalf of their own ego.
and lied to,that statement about it being a training mission i can see being 100% true,so most if not all these Russinan solders had no idea there were going to a conflict zone
