Russian invasion of Ukraine

If true this thread is worth a read - surely Putin can't out last this?

I was gonna say, I've not met a single Russian (or Ukrainian) that isn't all over Telegram. That's the app of choice and it's not a surprise to see news disseminated there. Most Russians are not some brainwashed idiots who believe anything their government tells them. The thing about the policy of constant and obvious lies is that their own public have no trust in anything that comes from official sources (sounds familiar).

Having said that, my Russian-speaking Ukrainian friend said he lost loads of Russian friends after the whole Crimea invasion and previously reasonable people just went insane and swallowed the Kremlin bullshit hook, line and sinker. So obviously it's not true for everyone.

That tweet will be presumably blocked in the EU soon then.

Still think we should let them show RT here as long as we can broadcast BBC in Russia. At this point it's a pretty black and white situation and the Russian public would be better off hearing the real news.

Russia acknowledges losses for the first time

For the first time, the Russian defence ministry has acknowledged casualties in Ukraine, but it has not given figures.
"There have been killed and wounded among the Russian military during the course of the special military operation," the defence ministry in Moscow said in a statement quoted by TASS news agency.
"The losses suffered by the Russian armed forces are several times less than the number of exterminated nationalists," it said.

Eu now going to start shipping arms to Ukraine. That’s going to help calm things down I’m sure!
It's that interesting question though of at which point do you stop walking on eggshells around a tyrant. At which point do we decide that this has escalated enough and actually winning the war becomes the priority.

I'm sure there are plenty of examples from history where dictators were appeased for too long for fear of making things worse, and plenty of opposite examples, where steaming in too quickly made things worse. But ultimately, for the Ukrainians, the only way to "calm things down" would be to surrender their country to an aggressive neighbour.

True but it’s a fine balancing act!

‘Exterminated’ - wow that’s some serious fascist language.
‘Nationalist’ - oops , forgetting that the Ukrainian’s are meant to be welcoming the Russians according to putin.
