Russian invasion of Ukraine

Feels to me that this action (invasion of Ukraine) could well be the end of Putin.

Access to social media is a pain in the ass to your modern dictator. He seems to be struggling to carry the people with him and there are undoubtedly people close to him who are more in touch with reality. They will gain confidence to act against Putin with every act of defiance. This defiance is coming from civilians, military and it seems even some oligarchs.

The world may turn out to be a slightly better place when this is all over, or maybe not. Incredible times.

I find the number of people in the press calling for a no-fly zone before we’ve exhausted all diplomatic channels rather disturbing.

I just don’t see how we can create a no fly zone with any mission objective other than evicting the Russians from Ukraine and that means going in, and going in hard.

They are making progress however. Albeit slow. Turkey needs to send more drones
Not meaning to single you out, but replying with a more general point...

I understand everyone wants to see the weedy kid standing up to the school bully and giving him a bloody nose. Of course we want to see Putin turning around and pulling out.

But realistically, this is just not going to happen. Admirable - hugely admirable and courageous though the Ukrainian resistance may be - I honestly think it's futile. The longer it goes on, the more lives are lost, injuries sustained, buildings destroyed.

I am afraid I think there can be only one outcome here (sadly). No matter how well intentioned, I think the west's efforts to prop up the Ukrainian defence are ultimately just making it worse.

Haven’t seen this posted, but the fact that a European leader is in contact with Putin and he is seemingly willing to cooperate seems like a positive.

Macron was sat across a [very long] desk to Putin this time last week, with Putin assuring him he wasn’t going to invade Ukraine.

As much as I’d like to be reassured that, “[Putin] confirmed his willingness to commit to these points”, I’m not sure I am.

Worse for Ukraine, better for the west the longer it goes on though. This isn’t a battle or a conflict that will end when the Russians take over the government.

Fuck that, Ukraine don't deserve to be a sacrificial lamb to make the rest of the world feel safe.

Nothing to do with making the west feel safe. Unless we put our own troops on the ground and our own planes in the air, Ukraine is lost IMO. And there is ZERO chance of us doing that.

Useful as a show of commitment/defiance to both the enemy and his people, but I imagine that piece of paper and the signatory will be reduced to ashes at some point this week. Worth noting it was an application to join the EU rather than NATO which really would put the cat among the pigeons
Not really as it would be impossible to join nato during conflict, the reason Ukraine wasn’t it nato already was the Russian backed poxy war in the east since 2014.

Having a major western leader in regular contact with Putin cant be a bad thing, surely?

People like to have a go at Macron (not saying you are), but the way he said that he wasn't taking any sh*t from non-vaccinated people causing problems for the rest of the French population and now trying to do something about Putin whilst still committing to backing up Ukraine with weapons and aid, you can't really knock him for trying.

How do all these weapons provided by the rest of the world actually make their way to the Ukrainian army if the Russians have the country surrounded?

Don’t forget Russia doesn’t have Ukraine surrounded. NATO armies are on the borders of Ukraine in Lithuania, Poland, and Romania.

No but it's a battle that can continue in the mid and longer term as the sanctions really start to bite.

Putin one stubborn wanker he will not stop until he takes Ukraine and possibly more countries. His nuclear arsenal his big ace because let’s be honest without it he stops this barbaric medieval atrocity. How can one inhumane piece of shit have so much power I feel sick!!

Not meaning to single you out but thank fuck people like you aren't in charge of supporting the Ukraine effort by supplying the necessary equipment for them to defend themselves. If they want to fight they deserve all the help we and any other country can give them.

The spirit and bravery being shown by the Ukraine people is truly inspiring and I think they may well prevail.

It isn't lost though is it, and if they keep holding out the Russian economy is going to hit rock bottom and without new supplies Russia will not be able to make new weapons to continue fighting.
