Russian invasion of Ukraine

I understand what you're saying that NATO isn't a threat to Russia, but Russia thinks it is.

However I don't think that's true - after all, Putin is not justifying his invasion with NATO back home, he's come up with this entire fictional genocide on ethnic Russians and how the country needs to be liberated from Neo-Nazis.

That kind of lie is incredibly difficult to pull off. He would have invested billions in propaganda and misinformation and social media trolls, and enforcing restrictions on the press.

If the Russian public would have accepted NATO threatening Russia as an excuse, he'd have just used that.
This is a point that needs repeating more. Not sure why so many are repeating the bullshit that the invasion is to stop an expansionist NATO when Putin isn’t even bothering trying to use that as the pretext for his invasion to the Russian people.

It’s a bizzare train of thought given when the original members signed in 1949 there’s a clear statement any sovereign European country can request membership to the council. This was subsequently clarified to include that accession to the council would be for the requesting country and all members of council and no third party country. Therefore it’s never been in Putin’s remit to block membership legally hence the annexations in Moldova Georgia & Ukraine. But he’s a great leader blah blah and we should just appease him look at it from a Russian perspective etc.

Having read your riposte (thanks for subjecting yourself to Brand for the good of the thread) I’d be pretty embarrassed to have watched it and believed it made good points.

Isn't this exactly the problem with people like Brand though? His target audience is people who aren't educated on the subject, they just see his position of authority (5m subscribers) and his self-proclaimed "neutral", "curious mind" spiel and believe it.

If people are dumb enough to believe what Trump says, why are you surprised that some people believe what Putin says. Mostly it`s the same fuckwits
