Russian invasion of Ukraine

NATO was essentially a cold war necessity to confront the very real threat of the Warsaw pact. With the benefit of hindsight we should probably have looked to wind down NATO during the 90's. I suppose though that with the old Soviet nuclear arsenal still very much there and European countries not willing or able to commit to the nessecary defense spending we still needed the us military presence in Europe. I think Europe/the EU could possibly extend to Ukraine etc in a benign way, but NATO membership just carries too much cold war (anti russian) baggage.

How on earth would winding down NATO contribute to a safer world? Until we have multi-lateral non-nuclear agreements (as if) NATO continues to provide the same "guarantee" against the use of nuclear weapons. This can only be strengthened by its acceptance of new members, indeed taking it to (unlikely) extremes should all the worlds nuclear powers, together with the wannabe's, join NATO, then you might have an outside chance of a non-nuclear weapon future.

Just how robust that guarantee is is being tested to a greater degree than ever before right now.

If you accept the argument that Ukraine joining NATO cannot happen due to the reaction of Russia, then you accept that Ukraine is a Russian vassal and not a sovereign nation empowered to make its own decisions.

I suspect the vast majority of Ukrainians would take issue with that

The Russian stock market has remained closed for a 5th day.

The last time it was closed for 5 days was 1917.

It remained shut until 1992.
Tbf to the **** and probably the only time I’ll use that phase they did state it would close for at least 6 days so Monday will be the interesting day in terms of if it opens and if so how fucked it is. Hopefully very and every single Russian can see them heading to severe hardships and food being a privilege like the good old days of the ussr.

Another bragging lie uncovered

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Tuesday that the UK had become the first country to pass a law banning ships with "any Russian connection" from entering its ports.
Mr Lay said: "Sadly, this doesn't seem to be the case."
"The Department for Transport rules only appear to cover the ownership and operators of vessels, not the cargo."

I'm certainly no expert, but the US reconnaissance aircraft seem to be based in Chania, Crete, supported along the Romanian/Moldova border area by the RAF.

The US Stratotankers come from Mildenhall and the surveillance drones from the Malta area.

There's plenty of constant air activity and support the West side of the border.

This is only going to lead more countries joining NATO, if somehow the Russians are pushed back (not likely) Ukraine will become a member so quickly Putin will be spinning in his grave (hopefully)

soup and a crusty cob every night for tea

As much as I love the resurrection of twatbanana when overthinking the true meaning/context of the phase I am thinking twatapple woubetter suffice for Putin.
My interpretation of twatbanana in a literal sense woukd be a banana that’s been wedged up a twat so long it’s gone rotten, and therefore rather insulting when directed at a person. However using the same fucked up analogy for other fruit decaying and festering up a twat I just think the rotten core element in addition the decayed twat juice soaked rotten fruit make a twatapple a better description of Putin.

And with that overthought process I am off for a drink.

Cider?

I believe that translates to; we're fucked economically.

I really really hope so mate, he's gone way beyond the negotiating stage now, hell bent on destroying the world. We certainly can't go back on these sanctions in the hope that he talks. Fuck it, he's the biggest lying **** in the whole of the world

NATO expansionism.

How close is Turkey to the North Atlantic?
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is an Organisation of countries that support and uphold the "North Atlantic Treaty".

The people who abide by the Maastricht Treaty don't all live in the suburbs of Maastricht.

The Treaty of Paris was signed between England and the newly formed United States of America. Neither are in France.

Edit: NATO is not an Organisatio of North Atlantic states.
