To be honest I dont think Best was ever in the same conversation as Doherty, great player but Best got a lot more attention because of who he played for & weirdly enough I dont think he ever played that well against city?
Cant remember them talking about Finney?

To be fair. Best did win a ballon dor. Quite a few ex pros have said he was the most naturally gifted footballer they have ever seen.

Like I said Best was a great player but because of the times & who he played for in my view he is quite a bit overated,
I think its always been the same, look at Beckham, another good player but completely overated because of who he played for,
Yet to me one of the best players ever David Silva gets very little credit away from city because of the type of bloke he is & who he played for, as I say only my opinion :-)

I hated George Best with a passion for what he did (intentionally) to Glyn Pardoe.

That said, you'd have to be completely biased to even think that David Silva was anywhere near as good as George Best

Best at his peak was second only to Maradona in my opinion.

I`ve no idea to be honest, he sort of fell out with football in the mid/late 60`s and thought the game had changed so much, he very rarely spoke about it.

To be honest I think its almost impossible to compare players from different eras & I was only a kid when I saw Best play at maine road (couldnt understand what all the fuss was about) but I know the player I would sooner have in my side if I was a manager & it wouldnt be Best ;-)

My father is the same, he is now 91 and always talks about Doherty being the best ever.

He is very biased so I would say he would rate Doherty higher, but knowing him Puskas would not be far behind. I will see what he says tomorrow. One thing though is that he is not a Sterling fan.

Did he see Peter doherty.

He did, but not for City as he was too young at the time but he saw him at Maine Road after the war playing for Derby and possibly during the war when players guested for other teams.

I saw Best a lot as a kid but I never saw him perform on the bigger stages, except at Wembley in the European Cup final on TV, in 1968, I was already a blue, but my dad took us to City 1 week and United the next. Best was a media darling; exciting tricky dribbler, who could shoot with both feet, but he wasn't better than Lee or Bell, who could do the same - and more; I wouldn't have swapped either of them for him.
My dad used to enthuse about Doherty, but he always loved King Colin; the M.E.N. back in the day used to always refer to Bell as the new Peter Doherty. All I can say is that, going off Bell's standards, Doherty must have been a hell of a player, and I wish I could have seen him to judge for myself.
