Russian invasion of Ukraine

Seen the price of fuel recently?

This is going to impact all of us I am afraid, it doesn't mean we are going to have tanks rolling down our streets - but more holistic impacts.
I'm afraid higher fuel costs seems rather like an "indirect" effect compared to being bombed.

Our government are a bunch of clueless twats and I didn’t vote for them btw. I also voted remain. I’m a progressive centrist and I believe in a free, connected global society.

Having said that I do think Boris and his rabble are handing this particular situation about as well as anyone - except those not mired in taking donations from Russian oligarchs.
Fixed that last sentence.

Such as lifting billions out of poverty.
Of course it is not perfect, but be realistic. I have never come across an example of socialism lifting people out of poverty.

Moldova
Croatua
Belgium
Portugal
Spain
Armenia

Are just a few where social and economic progress has happened.

But this has nowt to do with the thread so is mute

Taken from an opinion piece in the Guardian yesterday.....

"The same goes for the European Union. Britons, especially, came to associate the EU with trade at best, pettifogging bureaucracy at worst. When the EU won the Nobel peace prize in 2012, many scratched their heads with incomprehension. Well, there’s no excuse for bafflement now. Putin has jogged our memories that the EU was founded out of the conviction that the only future for a continent that had been at the centre of two world wars in 30 years was to come together: to share sovereignty rather than to kill for it. The sight of a khaki-clad Volodymyr Zelenskiy signing Ukraine’s request to join the EU, even as Russian forces approached, demonstrated again that for Europeans, the EU has always been about safety and peace. How shaming to think of the Eurosceptics who pretended the EU was some kind of foreign occupier, referring to it as the “EUSSR”. How shaming to think that the British contribution to this noble postwar ideal was to abandon it."

Britain leaving the EU will turn out to be great…for the EU.

This last week disproved so many old myths about how slow and ineffective it is, and it’ll likely be the EU sanctions that cripple Russia and hit the Oligarchs above anything else, proving its power as a bloc.

Without our eurosceptics as an anchor you’d imagine they’ll add Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova and the Western Balkans in the near future.

Vladimir Putin has said Western sanctions on Russia amounted to a declaration of war.

so why is it not WW3?

why not just enforce the no fly zone if he thinks we’ve already crossed the line
Because he’s trying to bait/goad the West into doing exactly that so he can be relieved of responsibility for his next actions. Just because he says something doesn’t make it so.

There is no half way. There is no way or all the way and in this case the end game of all the way is MAD.

Or maybe it's more nuanced than this and there are no 'good guys' or 'bad guys'. Western society has a lot of massive massive problems and we do try and play the 'we are the good guys' card way too often.

Capatalism has reaked havok on the planet and caused significant issues within our own societies. There are better alternatives than late stage capatalism and communism...

No bad guys? Think you'll find that difficult to defend at the moment. Capitalism isn't perfect but it's a fuck ton better than any workable alternatives

From another non-football forum i go on, one of the blokes on there was explaining that his Mrs runs a scout/cub group. One of the young lads there is Russian, and another is Ukrainian.

Russian kid was in absolute floods of tears because he thought they were gonna ban him from attending the group.

Ukrainian kid also in tears because he thought he wouldn't get to see his (russian) mate.

Sorta brings home the reality
There has certainly been some hostility towards Russian families' children in schools here, and schools having to work at it.

Calling Comrade Rascal to the forum.!!
Come on now. Cancelling @Rascal opinion is putin territory. He made some very good points and it adds to the overall conversation. Otherwise what is the point of having a discussion on the Russian invaders?

Not a fan of the group attack approach.

When its said NATO cannot intervene as Ukraine is not a member, can someone tell me what year Kuwait joined NATO before IRAQ invaded ?
There wasn't a nuclear power on the other side in Kuwait.
But 1 get 1 free cocktails have half the alcohol. Cocktails are the biggest sham ever when it comes to ABV.
Maybe in bars that's right. Here at chez moi, my negroni will blow your socks off.

That’s really sad, hope they’re both ok. But if any group is about promoting brotherhood and teamwork across borders, it’s the Scouts. Fantastic organisation.

And God bless all the suckers over the years who've paid about £8 a cocktail which has helped my retirement fund.. :-)

Weird really, I posted an opinion piece from a Marxist perspective.

I did not endorse the article, i posted it so that other posters could read that different perspectives from the prevailing BM perspective were available. The article was then moderated.

Has BM become like Putin's Russia were censorship is rife and only the official party line is tolerated.
Just to clarify, your post was only moderated because it’s against the forum rules to copy & paste entire articles for copyright reasons. I even sought out the source of the article and added a link to your post, rather than just deleting it. I’d hardly class that as censorship tbf.

Yeah, we are going to find out in the coming decades that capatalism has a tipping point - you know all those resources that we keep destorying for it?

They have a finite life span.

Nobody is cancelling Rascal. He's been posting his worldview for years and whilst usually a solitary voice with his opinions he's always been able to write what he wants.
Be interesting to see which points you think were very good?
Agree with your last sentence but if you think there wasn't going to be a fair bit of blowback when you consider what's taking place in front of the world's eyes then I don't know what to say.
