P & O

They have left themselves open if they have got rid of all UK staff and kept French on. There could be an unlimited pay-out at a tribunal due to discrimination, rather than the 1 year's salary they have built into their worst case model.

I know it is not a simple as that, but they have given away a few aces to the employees, got them selves in an undefendable position, and will probably pay out a fortune at arbitration.

The French are all employed shoreside on the French side and will be under different contracts. There are a handful of French seafarers still on the ships left over from the merger with Stena line many years ago but it's minimal and again they're on different contracts.

According to itv news, P&O haven't got the majority of replacement crew in place yet. They are looking at Tuesday before they can sail.

They’ve reflagged all their vessels to Cyprus for tax purposes and are owned by DP world so, presumably, can just ignore UK employment laws? You’d hope they’d be covered by EU employment law but seemingly not?
First post based on facts rather than emotion. If it’s losing £100m per year something drastic needed to happen. Feel very sorry for the workers but it appears to be a dead horse. I am surprised it’s lasted so long with all that’s gone on.

At least Tuesday I'd say. They need at least a weeks familiarisation and the MCA have to be satisfied they can fulfil all the safety aspects and evacuation procedures.

It was not losing 100 million a year, see one of my previous posts. It might have lost money in the pandemic but they had a government loan and furloughed most of the crew. They also were carrying ships full of freight to keep the UK going.

You can't throw a whole new crew onto an unfamiliar ship and be safe to sail; n a couple of days. Even with some experienced key crew guiding them it would take a good week of drills day and night.
I hope P&O have misjudged the time it takes, as I say itv reported that P&O said Tuesday. I would want staff trained etc. nothing usually happens, but when it does it can be devastating. (I remember the Herald of Free Enterprise tragedy)
Let's hope no one is allowed to cut corners just to get the trucks out/in.

They'll get it done eventually 7-10 days if they pass the MCA drills. Would I feel safe on one? No chance.

What ever is behind this story, two things are not right. FIirstly you cannot treat employees this way and secondly if your senior management and you have been losing £100m a year and then resort to this tactic, you have been doing a very poor job.

Contracts are utter shite but even knowing that they've broken every agreement they signed up to here.

It was only losing large amounts of money in the pandemic like every business but obviously kept running to supply the country.

I hope P&0 Ferries employ a load of security and some "cheap" crews and never have enough bookings to be a viable business again......I'd hope there was a knock on to bookings on cruises and anything with a P&O logo becomes toxic

What a moronic post.
P&O cruises are a completely different company with different owners!

I know that - I knew it when I posted it - I am on about the name - I would like the cruiseline to re-name itself - to distance itself from the ferries - rather like Russian oligarchs shithouse business owners like the Ferries owners need to be sanctioned by the public to show we are not going to put up with it - the alternative is in 5 years time everyone employed here will be on the breadline doing contract work in a gig economy. They get away with this then when the Columbian seafarers become "too expensive" they will go even cheaper. Wait until your holiday flight is piloted by someone who has been employed solely coz they are cheap and can be coached through an exam to get certificated - and your trains. If the govt had their way our roads would be full of Indian lorry drivers at the moment - have you seen their accident rates in their homeland?

Anyone with any principles dropped anything to do with British Gas - I know several of their ex-employee's thriving in this area picking up work as self employed gas safe fitters and heating engineers because people just don't want to know BG. The firm where I used to work under pressure from the Union no longer uses BA for flights for similar reasons - its alternate carriers if available or train - amazing how many meetings can now be done on Zoom.

Personal lines have to be drawn in the sand because your Govt doesn't give a shit about your your family nor your futures.

There is a labour shortage and minimum wage goes up to almost £20k in 2 weeks. Workers are empowered to fuck off and get something better at short notice these days when being shat on.

Getting a new job every couple of years does wonders for your inner peace. I don't understand people who hate their employer and stay with them for 10/20 years. You eventually realise all places are bad and good in different ways, but it is a good cleansing experience every time you move.

Rubbish.
P&O is a historic brand that goes back to the early 19th century and was amongst the first companies to provide passenger liner services. Just because some tinpot ferry company that has inherited the name and been sold to a foreign port operator is now dragging the name through the mud doesn’t mean that the historic brand should just be dumped. It’s like saying that aero engine manufacturer Rolls Royce plc should change their name if Rolls Royce Motors introduced dodgy working practices at its car plant.

That would be Rolls Royce Motors that everyone knows for a number of years have effectively been just top line BMW's?
