Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

Can’t help when I see it that Chris Rock is leaning forward preparing for that hit, and the hit looked acted - but the reaction from Will Smith after seems genuine.

Actors voluntarily go to an awards show where the host makes jokes about the audience.

This isn't bullying, he didn't accost them in the street, they decided to sit front row at a comedy gig knowing the host is paid to make fun of them.

If you can't take that, don't go. Don't sit in the front row.

This is the 3rd or 4th time Rock's done the show, so everyone knew what was coming. I just heard on the radio Pinkett-Smith has referred to her and Rock being friends in the past, so this isn't some random stranger coming up and abusing you, it's a friend telling a joke at your expense at a gig you came to knowing you'd get made fun of.

Will Smith spent 6 years making bald jokes in The Fresh Prince, it was their biggest and longest running gag. I imagine he's made a lot more hurtful jokes than Chris Rock's last night.

The right reaction is just to shake your head and show you felt it went too far, not laugh your head off initially and then assault someone when you realise your wife didn't like it and then say the devil made you do it later.
Imagine the reaction if it was a white actor slapping Rock.

that drop kick Smith apologised in his victory speech to everyone else but the only person he should have.

Rock did well not to make it an all in brawl and should have been given the best actor award given how crap the films this year were.

Perhaps Smith was told to do it in an effort to lift the ever flagging audience next year.

You (Or anyone here) are ok with your mrs being talked about like that? You'd laugh along at it and her with everyone else? No way for me.

Will Smith literally did laugh at the joke along with everyone else until he realised it didn't go over well with her.

He did until his wife took offence and then carried on like the dork he is and made a complete ass of himself.

the offensive jokes he has told in his lifetime make Rock's remark pale into insignificance by comparison.

Then not enough with that preceded to abuse the host and cried the crocodile tears when he should have been shown the door and the Oscar given to someone who shows a modicum respect for the award.

if you condone violence like that then I wouldn't want to be around you if someone makes a remark in jest about your Mrs.

I feel sorry for everyone else who won an award. Someone like Kenneth Brannaugh has been making good films for 30 years and finally gets his award, an independent film about deafness won 3 oscars including best picture - this is supposed to be their big moment, and some egotistical prick who's been taking Oscar bait roles for 20 years to try and get an award decided to make it all about him.

Everything about this was so pathetically weak. Laughing at the joke then snapping, slapping him, going back to your seat and then the speech...christ.

- He equated Richard Williams dealing with open racism and people trying to keep his daughters out of tennis to...his wife's friend making a joke about her.

- He got upset about public attention after going on his wife's talk show to air the fact she cheated on him and they have some sort of open marriage now.

- He refused to accept any responsibility and blamed the devil.

Now he's out celebrating like he's the only one who won an award and making them play his 90s hip hop songs at the after party.

It's genuinely pretty tragic that a minority think this was some show of manliness and protecting his family.

Laughing along or hitting the comedian aren't the only two possible options. He had the best possible platform to make his feelings known just 10 minutes later
Take the piss out of someones wife and thats the risk you take. Across the board any man would protect his wife. Surely? I would have thgouth "dont take the piss out of someones wife" would be the message rather than "Dont hit someone whos taken the piss out of your wife in front of the a global audience."

Took guts, well done him and any man that protects his wifes dignity

"Look at me. I'm going to wipe this smile off my face and walk thirty feet to open hand slap a comedian half my size in order to protect my wife from her friend."

I don't think he should concern himself with protecting her dignity when she robbed him of his long ago.

It's about egos, nothing more.

What if it was a female host who made the joke. Should he still get up and hit her as well?
