Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

It didn't though. Chris Rock was about to tell another joke or introduce the next part of the show when he stops as he sees Smith approaching.
Well, it did to me and seemingly everyone in the audience. It clearly wasn't, as you can see from the aftermath (and for the reasons you pointed out), but it all started off very strange

It looks staged because Will's angry husband routine is fake.

He seemed to find the joke funny until he saw his wife's face and remembered he is completely and utterly under the thumb.

"Keep my wife's fucking name out of your mouth!" That was embarrassing as fuck.

He really is a cuc

Fair enough. I am generally a bit cynical about any emotion on show at these glitzy award thingys
He definitely didn't look bothered by the joke in the moment and I imagine if he was sat around with Rock and a few mates and it was said he'd have laughed it off. He's obviously looked at his wife and thought "I've got to do something here".

He even slowly walks up as if hes deciding what he should do and gets too far to not go ahead with it. Think he's more angry as he sits back down from the adrenaline of it all.

He doesn't come off well from his decision. He was nailed on for the Oscar, he could have spent the next 10 mins coming up with a line to say about Rock in his speech rather than responding to a joke immediately with violence.

Meh. I thought it was this Rock.

I've always found the "I have to do something" thing weird. What if a champion cage fighter makes a joke about your wife? Do you just have to go and get your head kicked in?

Staged? Actors spend their entire life "faking reality", a degree of cynicism is inevitable. Comedians spend their entire life seeking attention, ditto
It's a serious matter, number 765762 on the list of things to give a single fuck about.
