Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

So if I'm getting this right, a lot of people on here think alopecia is off limits for jokes, even further and that if a comedian makes a joke about it then smacking them in the face is fair game.

Fuck me, we really are in a shit state of affairs.
IMO what Chris Rock did was out of order, Smiths reaction was also out of order.

I won't add anything deep or meaningful to the debate but my own view is that Will Smith is a fucking **** of a man.
The end.

IMO what Chris Rock did was out of order, Smiths reaction was also out of order.
Rock told a joke. Are you saying comedy should be banned, or somehow censored to suit will Smith?
How would you suggest this would be achieved?
If I go to a comedy show I'd fully expect to get the piss taken out of me or my missus.
Will Smith laughed at first. Then decided to defend his bird by trying a slap. He's lucky Chris didn't drop him as he approached.
Rock did nothing wrong here, unless you want to suppress comedy, and free speech.

Wasn't talking about the reaction of Smith, I'm just surprised and a bit saddened that so many feel the need to defend Chris Rock to the hilt over a really tastless joke.

I found the joke tasteless and horrible

but. I do understand that presenting the awards nowadays as a comedian you need to be controversial and push the line. You can’t blame him for that joke.

Because many people don't think it's acceptable to take the Mick out of someone with a medical condition.

Regardless of what you and i think about Smith , losing your hair isn't a pleasant experience for any woman, unless you know someone close that this has happened to you wouldnt necesarily see this problem. It looks to me as if there are alot of people on this thread that are ignorant of this issue and the upset and pain it can cause.

put it another way presumably you would have thought it OK for Chris Rock to take the mick about her hair loss if she was undergoing chemotherapy? Same result isn't it?

I'm guessing Smith laughed at first then saw the hurt in his wife's face and then overreacted. At that point it would have been better if they just should got up and walked out.
And miss HIS big moment?
You’re ‘avin’ a laff!

Why should she wear a wig? Just to stop people like you and Chris Rock laughing at her?

“Really tasteless joke”???

Really?

So many delicate flowers…

The Oscars should take back the award.

Any other 'incident', in its dodgy history, happened away from the stage and that's a different story, but Smith getting the award is actually condoning the violence that the Oscars (laughingly) says it doesn't condone!

If Rock doesn't change his mind and sue Smith he, too, is allowing the acceptance for people to display their displeasure to all and sundry because it 'comes without consequence'.

I know Rock, ironically, doesn't want to harm another Black man, but this is a repercussion that's far beyond that.
Open goal for Rock here, sue Smith and donate the money to charity.

For me, if Rock knew that she suffered from alopecia then it's tasteless. Taking the piss out of someone's physical appearance is the lowest form of comedy. Doesn't deserve to be hit for it though.

Smith could have addressed it in his acceptance speech, or in a statement later and Rock would have faced a public backlash.

I'm bald (like Pep) people have called me Baldy.
Water off a ducks back.
She said herself that it didn’t affect her anymore and she was embracing it!

The GI Jane crack was NOT tasteless unless someone can show me it was a highly personal, targeted joke meant to offend. I don’t think it was.

However, if she doesn’t want to have her own personal glass house broken, she shouldn’t hand out stones, either!

And, if Will Smith, one of the best loved crossover actors in years, wants to openly and brazenly commit a crime on global TV, then they’ve BOTH got to expect a few pelters!

They BOTH need to go away and reconsider how much of their personal life they want on full display for the cold, cruel world to discuss! THEY DID THAT!

Chris Rock merely did what comics do…made a quick crack about it…and made Smith laugh, until Jada sorted him out! THAT spoke far louder than his exhibition of “manhood”!!!

CB you have nailed it on this issue too many precious types in Hollywood these days spouting a moral compass and the like but like many actors when it comes to their own behaviours they are as hypocritical as one can get.

the fact that some were applauding Smith for showing " courage " in " "defending" his wife shows how warped some of the mentality is these days.

if it was a staged joke for Smith to come forward then so be it , it was a pretty droll if that was the case but he was serious playing the " offended " male "hero" and it backfired.

they should have chucked him out and insisted his wife could stay if she wanted to and some else could collect his award.

I’ll stay stood thank you very much.
So we can only laugh at the disabled if they’ve committed a crime then?

The real response to your "whatabout Pistorius" question is that it was 10 years ago and attitudes have changed.
