I found the joke tasteless and horrible

but. I do understand that presenting the awards nowadays as a comedian you need to be controversial and push the line. You can’t blame him for that joke.

Does anyone really watch the Oscars for comedy anyway?

Well, speaking as one of the handful on here that actually enjoys watching The Oscars I can say the comedy angle is a huge element of it that people do like, cringeworthy jokes.
Everybody expects this. These people know they are massively overpaid and they know it and attendance at the Oscars has a certain risk involved, as far as piss taking. The actors "normally" take it in good faith, it goes with being rich and famous. They dont have to attend but they know that their ego will force them to be there. Which in itself is quite funny.

Anyway, not the Oscars but John Cleese made my favourite acceptance speech;

I posted it because I think it was the best acceptance speech. I stated it wasnt the Oscars so you didnt have to watch it you thought it was irrelevant.

I know why you posted it. But if you couldn't remember an Oscar gag, maybe it has limited comedic appeal and impact.

Why can't they just keep it about the acting or personal topics they know people are happy to take flack for?

I. e. it’s okay to take the piss out Michael Caine for the Swarm or George Clooney for Batman but no need to go for their wives even though both live(d) in the public eye in their own right as model/actor and high profile lawyer.

Jada wasn't nominated for an award, so why does she need to be roasted?

Just seems like a cheap target . Would have worked better to joke about Will.

I do. Our obsession with celebrity is only outdone by our desire for content (not that I'm immune). I could watch that slap all day, if only to wonder if anyone has EVER followed through on a slap like Carltons cousin did.

For me, it's about why a [famous] man wasn't arrested and charged for physical violence to another [famous] man, documented live on international TV.

I didn't think it would need the violated individual's permission to charge that violent person if it was openly witnessed!
