Atletico (A) - Post-Match Thread

What happened last night was disgraceful but it wasn't at all surprising. I don't know whether it's years of frustration at the sense of entitlement and envy at the obvious success of their cross city rivals but if anything is in the DNA of a football club, it seems to be negativity, cynicism and brutal violence in the DNA of this Atletico club. After the first leg I had the uneasy feeling that we had seen nothing like the full repertoire of dark arts - time wasting, arguing and fouling - from our opponents. Certainly the time wasting had been nowhere near as bad as at OT. It was the almost sadistic leer on Savic's face in the post match interview at the Etihad, as he explained that the second leg would be very different that I wondered what we would be in for - and last night he, in person, showed what he meant, with a little help from his friends.

What was just as depressing was that the authorities seem to refuse to accept that this happens, despite 10 years of Simeone and experience of that club going back at least to 1974 that we know of. How long was it before Phil was treated to a mid-air body check with elbow in the head embellishment? A sending off in either code of rugby. And what we learned from it was that the referee had no idea that these were Atletico's deliberate, rehearsed tactics. Almost immediately it became clear that we did not have a referee who "wanted to let the game flow" but rather an official who didn't have the balls to deal with organised thuggery. Every time we seemed likely to string three passes together a "heavy tackle" broke it up, possession changed hands and the ref "let the game flow". But not when Atleti were in possession. And so the game did anything but flow. It was interrupted constantly and it's no wonder Madrid had so many more attacks in the second half. Fortunately we also learned as we progressed towards the 103rd minute of play, that City had an iron self-discipline and that Phil Foden, in addition to his boundless skill, has a ton of guts. We were all proud of our lads last night, but now we have to count the possible cost.

There is another vid by them talking about the brawl and it was funny how Gab was trying to make a case for Atletico's tatics and Laurens was having none of it saying it wasn't the right tatics cause they lose the game.

Na my memory of them isn’t too bad. I know what they were like and they had a limit and were able to control it.

That mob last night were unhinged.
Honestly you don’t think some of that was nothing out of order. Come on. Smashing into the back of Phil like that is dangerous. That challenge at the end. He wins the ball fair then goes to hurt him by doing him in his leg. That’s the very definition of out of order in a football field in my opinion.
 
Haven’t had time to go through the whole thread but could someone let me know what Ake was booked for?

strange really because according to camel gob who is really anti- City, players call each other that all the time. Guess you’ll be adding Jack to your list of FFS players.

Let's face it,we weren't exactly choirboys at City at the time. Mike Summerbee, Francis Lee, Tony Coleman, Mike Doyle... Even Tony Book wasn't averse to using the 'dark arts' on occasion.

I suppose it's all relative. You are right - this Atletico team is not as dirty as those from the 1970s, but they're the dirtiest around at the elite level at this moment in time. If they could realistically be as dirty as Leeds in the 1970s then they would happily choose to be that way. Fortunately times change and they operate in an environment that is less tolerant of thuggery on a football field.

None of today's teams are as dirty as those of yesteryear, but by the same token, none of yesteryear's teams are as good as today's teams. The Liverpool team of the 1980s would get panned by every team in the last 8 of the CL this year. When people pick all-time XIs though, they make allowances for changes and advances in coaching, and make assumptions about how good a player might have been in today's super-professional era. The same, therefore, has to be true when assessing how dirty a player of today might have been in a previous era. I fancy that at least half a dozen of those Atletico players would have been amongst the worst about if allowed to operate with a 1970s threshold of refereeing tolerance.
 
I believe If we beat Real Madrid we'll start next season as the highest ranks side in UEFA's coefficient rankings for the first time ever.
