Any Regrets...?

I regret voting for Labour when Blair first became PM.

I remember the excitement of the election, the night when I finally thought i was going to be see the end of Tory rule. I had grown up from the age of 13 with the misery of Tory rule, i finally had a chance to vote to end it or so I thought, but in my naivety i had not realised how far neo-liberalism had permeated into UK society, I had not realised that the post WW2 consensus was finished. Blair did OK but was no Socialist, he just carried on the work of the Tories.

Maybe if Labour hadn't won that election, the party would have got a new Socialist leader and my adult life would not have been so politically miserable and we would not have ended up with the reactionary bunch of cunts we have today.

All i have ever wanted is to live in a country that is peaceful, fair and decent. A country where every one regardless of who they are or where they are from gets decent schooling, is looked after by a well funded NHS, are treated well when ill fortune strikes, are safe to walk the streets, can afford to keep warm and eat a proper meal. Now it seems that is a pipe dream as we live in an increasingly authoritarian state, that is run in the interests of those with most. The I am alright Jack yuppie mindset of the 80s is the norm, hatred of difference is commonplace, culture wars are fought and woke is the new PC gone mad. Demonisation is everywhere, decency is frowned upon, doing good is belittled. As was once said "there is no such thing as society" has become true, we hate now before love, we are encouraged to spy on our neighbours where once we borrowed a cup of sugar. Showing you care is virtue signalling, I never imagined living in a country where having virtues would mean you would be ridiculed.

Our country is now a moral cesspit, lying is excused, philandering is fine, tax dodging is encouraged, our country is now unethical and immoral. Our once great democracy is a shambles, influence can be bought, corruption is rife and nepotism, cronyism, old school tie networks, sexism and racism are still attached to power.

We were once a great country, Blair on coming to power called us a young country, sadly Blair was right, we stayed young, we never grew up and if anything we regressed.

How I wish I had never voted for you Mr Blair, you had the power to make us a good country and failed so badly we now have this shit show of braggarts, charlatans, lunatics, liars and thieves taking our country further down the toilet and now we are a laughing stock.

Powerful that, Rasc.

Echoes how I feel.

Everything you’re complaining about was brought in by one of numerous Conservative governments starting with Thatcher and finishing with the lying fat turd in office right now.

The Tories dropped lucky in 2010 because their allies in the media managed to blame problems caused by the global financial crisis on the Labour government. History has demonstrated that we have had 12 years of regression in this country thanks to austerity then Brexit, none of which were necessary but were voted for by the public because the media managed to convince them to vote against their best interests.

Blaming our current situation on Blair is frankly bizarre.

Blair and Brown had favourable ratings of positivity that the narcissistic liar nor any other Tory leader since could dream off, but they failed to change the country and rid it of neo-liberalism. They could have halted the move towards where we are today but failed. Blair never restored Union power as promised, Brown cut taxes and both were comfortable with the EU and failed to forsee the effects of freedom of movement on an insular nation.

With the majority Blair had he could have achieved so much more, but he was politically naive and pandered to the RW media, he put his own personal ratings above the needs of the people who voted for him. Of course he and Brown did good things and i am a great admirer of Gordon Brown, but they failed and their brand of third way centrism opened the door for the right wing to go further right and we are now suffering the effects of their failure. They could have moved the Overton window significantly leftwards but didn't because Social Democrats are not Democratic Socialists.

If you feel my point is bizarre, that is fine as i was not complaining, i was opining about what could have been and what I would like our country to be. If you disagree with what i want the country to be then your reading of history differs from mine, that is all. We will of course never know, but what I do know is I regret voting for Blair.

Nope. I dont vote. Mugs game. Our grandfathers didnt fight a war for us to vote for the SHITE we have grasping for power.
That saddens me more than if you had admitted you had voted for the BNP.

My grandfather, a desert rat, fought the war so we could vote, we could remain a democracy and not slide into authoritarian rule. Every person who does not use their democratic mandate increases the likelihood of authoritarianism.

I am a lefty to my core but I would rather you voted for the Tories than not vote at all.

I think your grandfather, and everyone else's grandfather, fought in a war to ensure we had the right to vote. I exercise my right by abstaining from partaking in a flawed system which returns immoral liars of whatever colour whose driving incentive is their own progress, and the provision of a better country for the masses is a secondary, at best, aim.

Also, your initial post, heartfelt though it was, and reflective of any sane persons desires, is something of an unobtainable utopia I'm afraid. I can't think of a single country (though I'm no expert and would be happy to be corrected) which meets half the aims in your third paragraph for half their population.

Oh and in answer to the OP, no I don't regret my decision not to vote.
