Russian invasion of Ukraine

Really do wish the west could drop some f35's off for them.

Air superiority in a a day
Be a bit of a problem if they don't know how to take off in them....from what I understand the Ukranians need the Russian SU's more than the MIGS as they are far superior for ground attack operations which is where they want to focus.

Looking long term, after Putins' fall, trials of his henchmen and territory ceded, what do you think could happen?
My thought is that China will absorb much of what remains.

Me neither. Giving Putin a billion a day to inflict human fucking misery.
Whilst the Germans were fucking idiots in shutting down their Nuclear industry in the wake of Fukushima leading to their total dependence on Russian imports, it's not that easy to switch off those imports overnight or even in the space of a few weeks.

Our own imports of Russian gas and oil are still ongoing and we are in a transition period to reduce those imports to zero by the end of the year, and that's with Russian oil and gas making up just 8% and 4% of our oil and gas imports respectively.

If those figures were 40% or 50% like the Germans, achieving a reduction to zero in a short space of time would be that much harder. It needs an international effort to replace Russian oil and gas as well as individual countries making tough decisions to use less. These decisions need to be made quickly because it's not Germans or us who are being killed every day by Russians because the Russians are able to finance their war through the sale of oil and gas.

Ukraine is poor for sure, at least by European standards.

GDP per capita is ~$4.3k, similar to countries like Namibia and Mongolia.

Russia is around $11k. Bulgaria is the lowest EU country again at ~$11k. UK is ~$45k

Corruption is rather more subjective I guess, but there is a corruption index.

Ukraine ranks #117, not much better than Russia #129. UK is #11, with Denmark and NZ in the lead.

Thank you , i was under the impression with there wheat etc they were not a poor country , it looked so beautiful before the war

It really did. Lviv looks a fantastic city. Now i'll never get to go thanks to Vlad the destroyer.

What a waste of time and effort the whole thing is

I think people are really missing the wood for the trees with German gas imports.

They are refusing to help in so many ways and throwing up roadblocks to everything they have promised publicly.

It seems very clear that the German government is not prepared to abandon its last 30 years of policy towards Russia of “Be nice to them and they’ll eventually become a normal member of Europe” and they think this will blow over shortly.

Yes, and the Netherlands almost as much.

But the Netherlands are giving proper military support to Ukraine.

We must accept there's a limit to how much and how quickly countries can detatch themselves from Russia's gas, but they can give aid to Ukraine to make up for it, and the Netherlands is doing that while Germany refuses to.

In other words Scholz is a traitorous Russian stooge. What a ****.

Holocaust survivor, 91, dies in Mariupol basement

A Holocaust survivor has died while sheltering from Russian forces in the besieged city of Mariupol, the Jewish internet site Chabad.org reports.

Vanda Semyonovna Obiedkova, 91, and her family moved into a basement when Russian forces began their bombardment of the southern port city - which continues to face the brunt of Russian aggression.

She died on 4 April after spending weeks without water or heating.

Her grieving daughter Larissa said her mother spent the last two weeks of her life freezing and unable to stand up.
She told Chabad.org: "Mama didn't deserve such a death."
Larissa went on to describe how she spent all her time caring for her mother but "there was nothing we could do for her", adding the family were "living like animals."

"There was no water, no electricity, no heat—and it was unbearably cold," she said.

Ms Obiedkova, who was born in Mariupol on 8 December, was just ten-years-old when the Nazis entered the city in 1941.

When SS troops came to Ms Obiedkova's home and captured her mother, she was able to escape by hiding in a basement.
