Gas & Electricity

Anyone with a jacuzzi, turn it off. Wife's mate was happily using it for months and just got a 3 grand bill
 
Do any of you lot have a washer/dryer?

Do you think it would be a prudent purchase for drying clothes this winter, given that gas is more expensive than electricity and we have a gas boiler?

What are the running costs of drying your clothes in a dryer, roughly?

Gas isn't more expensive than electricity, its the other way around. Look at the post above by Blue Maverick, gas is under 10p per kWh and Electricity is just under 35p per kWh.
Running a dryer is very expensive, so if you are worried about your bills an old fashioned clothes horse in front of a radiator might be the best option.
If you want to work it out how much it will cost in a dryer, the heating element is normally between 2.2kW and 3kW and a full load of cotton bedding takes about 1hr to dry in a condensing dryer. So thats just over £1 per load.
The new heat pump tumble dryers are about 50% more efficient but they are more than double the price of a condensing one plus they take considerably longer to dry.

Thanks for this. 4-5 hours of central heating in our house costs around £10 since the start of April.

Sadly/fortunately my grandma has fallen and broken her hip and so is in respite/recovery at the moment.

We we’re looking at £500 a month in the winter, just for gas, to keep the house warm enough.

After October, it would have been £750.

If she’s unable to come back to us, then we’d almost leave the heating off, but trying to work out whether drying it on radiators or in a dryer is more cost effective,

Sorry to hear about your grandma. Thats quite expensive for only 4-5hrs, is it very big or poorly insulated ?

Pretty sure its only about a fiver a day for me (5 bed detached built in the 60s) and the wife has it cranked up in winter.

Make sure your boiler is set to less than 60 deg for the feed to the radiators or it wont be running efficiently. Know a few people who service boilers and they say everyone tends to have the temperature set to max which is similar to driving a car with your foot flat to the floor. It heats the house up more quickly but then it overshoots (goes above the target temperature) and turns off. Its then repeats the cycle each time the temperature drops.

If its just a choice between putting the rads on for only drying clothes and not for heating the house then a dryer may be sensible as the heat is concentrated on the clothes rather than heating the air in the whole house.

It’s a big house with an old boiler. We don’t have control over changing it, sadly. Insulation is good though.

It’s an impossible question really as it depends on how long we can go without heating the house as to whether the outlay of buying a machine will be worth it.

Crazy hike again and I don’t think it will stop there.

If VAT isn’t removed and a windfall tax brought in immediately I can see riots happening.

Its not on, because we know that they have increased bills and DDs by too much already. Ofgen told us this. So, one hike is enough Shirley? These energy companies are raking it in

As is the government who announce the 4th highest ever debt for last month borrowing wise yet are creaming tax revenue in left, right and centre.

Things are all wrong.
 
Wood burner being fitted in mine. I'm not entertaining these daft prices. I know good wood costs and I will happily pay it, but as its such a small house it will heat most of it. I'm not entertaining these ludicrous prices, they can fuck right off. I've always wanted one anyway and it gave me the kick up the hoop to do some overtime and buy one. The prices won't come down, ever. Eventually, they may say they won't put them up when the cap review comes around and make out like they are doing us all a favour. Load of shit
