I'm very much in favor of scientific missions to outer space. We're bound to find all sorts of unexpected and interesting things - some of which will lead to inventions that benefit mankind.

I'm far less a fan of nationalistic - one-upmanship missions that stand little to gain in terms of knowledge and that are aimed primarily as some sort of badge of achievement.

To wit: manned missions to the moon; establishment of a colony on mars.

Eventually yes - both missions are laudable - but now? At this time, given our state of technology?

A manned mission to the moon would accomplish nothing that an unmanned mission could - while incurring the unnecessary risk of human life. For the same sort of expenditure, I'd be far more interested in funding missions to send unmanned spacecraft to Titan, Europa, and other such destinations within our solar system to explore the possibility of non-terrestrial life.

And a manned mission to Mars - suicidal and unnecessary. A complete waste of money at present time.

We need to build on the moon eventually. Moon base Alpha. It's easier and cheaper to launch craft from the moon.

James Webb presser coming soon - first images.

Starting now

created a new thread as didn't know this one existed.

Looking forward to the picture of galaxies 13bn light years away.

Looks like the big boy might be delayed....

Was looking forward to the orbital test but best this happens now.

Comparing the Hubble Deep field image to the JWST. biggest thing to also point out. Hubble took 50 days to take that image. JWST took 12.5 hours to significantly improve on it.
