Johnson will become an Aunt Sally but the problems are much deeper than him. Scotland needs to become independent, the situation in Northern Ireland needs to be resolved, and then England needs to change its electoral system and decide what it wants to do. The fantasy of ‘levelling up’ also dies today, so people should be told the truth of what lies ahead.

It’s time for politicians from all sides to sit down and do their job, as years of doing nothing has made everyone poorer.

To what end though mate? He won’t be able to get any new policy through. If he is unable to form a cabinet then I’d concur with you but in the absence of that it seems like creating chaos for the sake of it. On the international stage Johnson has actually done ok (ignoring Brexit, particularly the furore with the NI protocol for a minute), with the Ukraine war the world needs continuation not more chaos or crisis. What this country, or the world, doesn’t need is some leadership hopeful taking the reigns and using it as an leadership campaign.

Possibly not, although there's hardly an abundance of outstanding candidates lined up to replace him. Suella Braverman and Steve Baker the first to throw their hats into the ring, god help us. The leadership election could yet further divide the Conservative party too.

I have this strange feeling this is likely to be because they are isolated within the party, and want to reaffirm that they are popular with the base.

Do you honestly think Raab or whoever won’t try and use it as an extended job interview? Imagine Patel in charge, she’d have the English Channel mined to show how tough she is on immigration! If the 1922 committee wanted to expedite the election process they surely can? they don’t need to spend weeks or months just because that’s how it’s been done before. I don’t think Johnson can dictate his timing for going once a new leader, thus PM, has been elected.

If any of those are elected PM, the chances of Labour winning at the next election increase dramatically.
